Litter Robot red light comes on with no activity

The litter robot resets after a cycle, but after a while the red light comes on and thereafter another cycle starts and resets. This happens with no activity. There have aslo been some occasions that the red light flashes without the waste tray being full.

Hi,

Please check your unit for the following:

  • The litter is above the fill line or in excess of 10lbs.
  • CATS has not been reset after adding weight
  • The waste drawer has too much weight
  • The unit is sitting on an uneven surface ‐ grout lines on a tile floor or in a bathtub.
  • The unit is pushed into a corner, against a wall, or furniture
  • Objects are resting or pressing on the unit

The red blinking light indicates CATS (the cat sensor) is detecting excess weight for more than 2 minutes. To test your changes, power the unit off and then on. Allow the unit to complete the start‐up cycle and return Home with a solid blue light. Your unit is operating normally. If it continues to flash, let us know so we can troubleshoot further.

Always press Reset after emptying the waste drawer, adding litter, or moving the unit. You can also turn the unit OFF then ON to ensure the baseline is set properly. When pressing Reset, watch for the blue light to quickly flash one time. This indicates CATS has been successfully reset.

If none of the above solves the issue:

  1. Remove the bonnet.
  2. Remove the globe
  3. Replace the bonnet
  4. Press Cycle (without the globe on the unit)
  5. Allow the motor to run for 5 seconds, at any point, does it stop and flash red? If no, then excess weight needs to be removed from the globe. If yes, (it blinks red), your unit will need to be repaired.

Please respond to this email and let us know the results.

I tried steps 1 - 5 but now the unit flashes blue (despite not being full and even does it without the drawer inserted) and when I press reset it changes to flashing quickly yellow.

Hi @Neilmcleod

Try unplugging the robot for several hours. This can help sometimes.

If not, it is possible that DFI sensor and cat sensor need to be replaced.

Is your robot still in warranty?

Thank you.

Hello. The DFI and cat sensor were replaced under warranty within the last year. I am now out of warranty and running out of patience. I don’t recall a time that the unit has worked properly for 6 months.
It is currently off so I can try it when I get home from work. It doesn’t move at all now and changes between flashing blue to rapid flashing yellow with each press of the reset button.

The unit is working again having left it unplugged overnight. Will that be it fixed?

Hi @Neilmcleod

It can help sometimes when this issues (blue blinking light → yellow blinking fast) appears.

You will see in next days if it is working fine again.

Hi, yesterday the unit started showing a flashing blue light despite the tray not being full and would reset to solid blue. During this time the unit would sense cat activity and rotate. I recalibrated the DFI but the fault remained. This morning I noticed that the unit had not cycled following cat activity. I reset then cycled the machine but when I pressed reset at the end of the cycle, I am now back at the flashing blue/rapid flashing yellow problem.

Hey @Neilmcleod

This would probably mean that there is an issue with DFI sensor.

Is your robot still in warranty?

Thank you.

No the warranty expired earlier this year, but the dfi sensor was replaced towards the end of last year so either it isn’t the problem or the replacement has failed very quickly.

Unfortunately we had situation where DFI sensor would fail within one year of usage.

Hi,
The weakest link of this device is the dfi electronic card. the most common fault is dfi card failure. Dfi cards works in an acidic humid environment. If the robot is working again after being turned off for a while, this means the dfi card is not completely dead and there is a short circuit triggered by moisture and rust on the dfi electronic board. The reason for this situation is that moisture and rust are conductive. The IC legs on the electronic board are very close to each other and the rust that starts in any of the legs contacts the other leg over time. This contact should be avoided. The legs of the ICs are very close together and the rust may be too small to be seen with the naked eye. Rust needs to be gently removed under a magnifying glass without damaging the electronics. Alcohol and toothbrush are suitable for rust removal. After the rusty area is cleaned, rusting starts over time in humid working environment. For this reason, the rusty area should be isolated from moisture and electronic card protective transparent acrylic spray should be used.

Hi, I have looked at the cards. The coating on them seems to be intact and even under a magnifying glass, I can’t see any breaks or corrosion.
I don’t know what to do now, the unit does not work at all as it simply alternates between flashing blue and rapid flashing yellow.

Hi @Neilmcleod

It seems that DFI sensor needs to be replaced again.

So will I have to pay even although its a new part?

Unfortunately yes, since the part is more than 3 months old.

Hello there. The solution I propose is to repair simple and visible short circuits. Clean the dfi board carefully with alcohol and remove the rust. If it still doesn’t work, there’s nothing you can do. You cannot repair the dfi card. in this case, the only option is new dfi card.
Before using the new dfi card you bought, I suggest you cover it with transparent nail polish. except IR LEDs

I have taken some pictures of the cards.

can you see anything wrong?

Hello @Neilmcleod ,

Thank you for your reply.

There is no visible damage on the boards.

Did you check if the IR LEDs are working properly?

Have you tried to clean these circuit boards with alcohol?

Awaiting your reply.

Sincerely,
