Litter Robot III Open Air — cat pees on back paw now

Okay, I know this is a weird question…

When we moved, we upgraded from a Litter Robot II with the bubble to Litter Robot Open Air, and now our cat keeps emerging from the litter box with pee/litter stuck all over his back paw.

As far as we can tell, he sticks his head in but doesn’t turn around, pees at the very entrance where there isn’t any litter, getting it on his paws, and then turns around to kick litter on it.

Maybe with the old box with the bubble, he had more room, and formed a habit?

Anyone else have this problem? We’re not sure what to do to fix this — we tried nudging him when he goes into the litter robot but he just got confused and jumped out of the litter robot. Maybe add an obstruction somehow so he’s forced to turn around and actually get his butt over the litter to pee? Any ideas for how to train/trick/convince him to turn around before doing his business?

Kind of at our wits end — really want to continue using the Litter Robot but cleaning litter off his paw every day makes us wish we had the old litter robot still.

Hi,

You can try using the Litter-Robot Fence to force your cat to enter completely inside the Litter-Robot before doing his business.

We had a few customers trying it and having success.

Oh, didn’t know about that! Thank you, ordered, I hope it works.

Alas, we received the fence but still having the same problem. Just wanted to update in case anyone else is having the same problem!

Not sure what else to do now — we’re going to try some additional homemade solutions to try to force him to turn around in the unit but appreciate any ideas anyone has as well.

I just got my litter robot not too long ago and I’m having this same issue. My cat puts his head and front paws in the robot, but his back half is still outside of it and ends up peeing on the floor. Ive got the fence and it doesnt work. Anything else work for you yet?

@MarkL
You could try hanging out something from the globe and force your cat to enter it properly. You could also try the Litter-Robot ramp, see if it would help your cat to enter the Litter-Robot.

Did you ever find a solution? My cat dies the same thing and it’s so frustrating! Thanks!

We’re have the exact same problem…from an original Litter Robot to the LR3. Frustrating. We also have a diabetic cat, with a high urine frequency which causes a lot of condensation in the drawer and throws of the full drawer sensors.

Very much wishing I could do back to the original unit. In a lot of ways there is smart design that went into this new unit, but I think some of the improvements also created new complexities…

Hi Everyone,

I don’t have that issue but maybe you might want to try to use catnip spray inside the liter robot to assure them that that is their box.

My issue is my cat goes in all the way then she jumps right out of the box, I have bought her a ramp and a separate step stairs that is as high as the litter robot 's little black fence that came with the robot. It still doesn’t stop her from jumping out of the litter robot when she finishes and so by doing this she kicks off some poop from her paw and spreads it on the floor. Any suggestions on how to make her not jump out of the litter robot?

A post was split to a new topic: Litter-robot issue recent model

Anyone ever find a solution to this? I bought the fence and my cat goes in but when she pees she doesn’t turn around, this puts her peeing at the top of the fence, some goes in, some leaks down the front to the step, some goes on the carpet. I love the litter robot, but it’s so frustrating to clean urine ever day.

Hey @OpaOneKenobe,

Have you maybe tried to use catnip spray for inside the litter robot as @Chooliee suggested?

My male cat does the same thing. Not only does he have litter caked on his back paws, but the litter does not clump properly because the pee is sliding down under the litter. The clumps stick to the black tub portion and I have to scrape off. I have tried different litters and a couple non-sticking sprays and nothing helps. I also had to remove the stairs as he would also pee on those by leaving his back end out.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! .

Hi @Kscott319 !

As my colleague mentioned, you can try using the Litter-Robot Fence to force your cat to enter completely inside the Litter-Robot before doing his business.

Regarding litter types. Any clay based clumping litter should work. You can see some reviews here: https://www.catfooddispensersreviews.com/best-litter-for-the-litter-robot/

Got our litter robot today and we are already having the same problem. I was already a skeptical and this does not help. We have the extra fence and steps. Also the cats jump out from the box and do not use the steps bringing litter ALL over the floor. Not off to a good start.

Hi @Didadel !

You have a 90 day money back guarantee, so you can use that time for trying out different things to solve it.

Yea that’s the plan. They are starting to use it correctly, but now the issue is they can’t step down the steps and instead jump right out of the box tracking a lot of litter out with them all over the floor

My cat has been urinating on his feet too. It seems with the old bubble model, he could get his whole body inside. I guess he likes to keep his tail hanging out. The fence and hanging coins, or a string with a washer, didn’t work. He pees until his back paws get covered and then tracks it all over the floors and onto the furniture. It’s super expensive so I don’t want to throw it out. But I may have to go to some other box set up. The goal was to make my life easier, bit I’m spending more time cleaning now than if I just scooped litter.

I have been dealing with the same issue. I have tried everything. My cat also is constantly knocking the fence off. This is causing me more stress than making my life easy. I am constantly cleaning up pee, poo and litter.

Hello @Rashelleriot,

Welcome to RobotShop community.

We are sorry to hear that you are having this issue with your Litter-Robot.

Please make sure that the fence is installed properly so that the cat wouldn’t be able to knock it off easily.

You can use this video to show you how it’s properly installed:

Let us know if you still need further assistance.
