I find our issue to be a combo of a LOT of what everyone has experienced, and I would ask that we stifle any non-constructive responses suggesting purchase of the LR Fence/Gate, the purchase of the LR ramp/stairs, or that any clumping litter will perform satisfactorily. I have the gate, I have the stairs, and I have unhappily tried many different litters (which I really don’t like doing that to the cats).
I have now placed a webcam in the cat room to monitor and interdict, as needed, all voiding events…convenient enough during COVID, but not sustainable for the future…
We have three cats, one female, two males, all between 5-9 years of age using the LR3 wifi. The youngest male urinates “high”, exhibiting the symptom where “pee is sliding down under the litter” a la Kscott319. He will also tend to not want to fully enter, and if the gate is not properly installed, urine can seep onto the petite triangular rubber litter pad atop the faecal drawer.
The steps, when in place, make it easier for him to stand half-in/half-out when he urinates a la MarkL, making a worse mess. Thus, the steps have been relegated to the attic. They do not facilitate a gentle dismount at all.
The female will enter after the youngest male’s high urination event, and will periodically step into the high urine spot and get wet clay embedded in her back paw. Fun times, fun times on that cleanup. Otherwise, the older male and the female use the LR3 properly.
Further, the clay-wads created from the high-latitude-voiding tend to defy gravity, sticking to the plastic surfaces whenever it can, surviving upwards of 3-5 cycles before dropping half-successfully down the chute. Half-successful.
My absolute favorite part of this is where the pissberg decides to fall at the precise moment in the cycle where the chute has rotated beyond the poop-aperture (the pooperture?) and scrapes its way over the seals and up the inside the outer globe before it falls chunkily back onto the screen, where it will embed.
I envisioned a cleaning and coating of PAM or silicone spray, but noted the experiences of Kscott319.
We have found the litter mat from LR to be excellent for containing the leaping spray (a la Chooliee).
Otherwise, I perceive the issues are of architecture and materials. The “bag” holding the litter needs to be deeper and hold more litter, needs to be less cohesive of wet clay, perhaps more pliable, the gate/fence could be much higher, and perhaps a screen that permits entrance and egress but discourages leaping departures. I want to add more litter, but that is not necessarily the answer given the litter fill line.
So, I feel y’all’s pain…thoughts?
