Litter-Robot III Open Air Basic Troubleshooting Guide | RobotShop Community

Hi,

The unit is pretty sensitive and can pick-up weight from hands, arms, or other objects resting on the unit when “reset” is pressed. The unit should also be pulled away from a wall. Make sure you do not press on the Litter-Robot when you press the reset button.

We need to troubleshoot your cat sensor system (CATS). This is based on your description of a solid blue light after the cat has left the unit. Please try the following:

[NOTE: When attempting to activate CATS, troubleshoot with the following technique. We recommend applying pressure from the top of the globe entrance (not on the bonnet). Use a downward motion that pushes away from your body]

  1. Attempt to manually cycle the unit by pressing the “cycle” button. If the unit cycles properly, move to the next step.
  2. Reset the CATS by turning the unit off then on using the power button.
  3. During the start-up cycle, push on the unit to see if the CATS activates. If it does, press “reset” to pause the cycle, then press “reset” again to return the unit to home position.
  4. After the unit is on and in the home position, apply pressure to the unit. Does CATS activate (red light indicator)? If you apply more pressure, how much does it take to activate?
  5. If your unit switches to a red light after applying excessive pressure, consider the surface area that your unit is on (see below). If the CATS does not engage, refer to step 5.
  6. If your CATS does not engage, leave the unit off & unplugged. Notify us so we can make the necessary arrangements based on warranty.

The surface for your Litter-Robot should be hard to avoid the unit taking on extra absorption of weight. If the unit is sitting steady on the ground, but has a dip in the middle, the sensor may require much more weight to trigger. Instead, try putting the unit on a surface that is flat, such as a board. If your unit is on tile, we recommend that the back, center, of the unit is resting on the flat part of the tile and not on a grout line. Do not allow the unit to have items rest on it or be pushed up against the wall. Avoid resting on the unit when pressing the “reset” button.

My open air is blinking yellow when the night light is activated. During this time, the weight sensor is not triggered when a cat enters the unit. So, the unit does not make any cycles during the night or during low light. Every morning, I have to reset the unit, then force a manual clean cycle.

Hi Nishelle,
You might need to replaced the ‘‘Bonnet’’. Did you buy the robot with RobotShop?
If so, please contact us HERE

My open air will not stop rotating and it keeps popping the spring in the key. I read about others that had this problem and it seemed like a simple fix to replace the wiring harness. I did that, but it is continuing to rotate all the way around. What else can i do to fix this?

@Hope Make sure the hall effect sensors are properly installed. You should install the hall effect sensor with the Yellow wire on the left and the one with the Orange wire on the right. Let us know how it goes.

That seemed to have fixed it from rotating all the way, but now its just stopped and had the middle light blinking. Any thoughts?

Based on the description of the yellow light blinking while the cycle has been interrupted, please follow the troubleshooting below to determine whether the issue is due to excess weight, the bonnet connection, or the Anti-Pinch safety feature:

*The blinking yellow light will switch to blinking red after 2 minutes if the cat sensor (CATS) has been continuously activated by excess weight. Please remove excess weight and check your unit for the following:

  • The litter is above the fill line or in excess of 10lbs.
  • The cat sensor has not been reset after adding weight
  • The waste drawer has too much weight
  • The unit is sitting on an uneven surface - grout lines on tile floor or in a bathtub.
  • The unit is pushed into a corner, against a wall, or furniture
  • Objects are resting or pressing on the unit
  1. Press the ‘Power’ button to turn the unit OFF.
  2. Remove the bonnet and set it aside, then manually rotate the globe to the Home position.
  3. Ensure the globe is on the track and lock the black key on the back of the globe into the pocket.
  4. Replace the bonnet, ensuring all 4 tabs are secured.
  5. Press the ‘Power’ button to turn the unit back ON.

**The globe will not rotate and the yellow light will blink if the issue is due to the bonnet connection. Please check that the key is fully inserted into the slot and that all 4 bonnet tabs are connected to the base of the unit. See the following link for assembly instructions: http://litterrobot.kayako.com/Knowledgebase/Article/View/56/18/assembling-litter-robot-open-air

  1. The globe begins rotating counterclockwise with the solid yellow light on. After several seconds, press the ‘Reset’ button to pause the cycle.
  2. While the cycle is paused, press ‘Reset’ again to cancel the cycle and return to Home position.

***The globe will stop and reverse direction for 2 seconds before stopping with the yellow light blinking fast if the Anti-Pinch safety feature has been activated. Your base will need to be repaired.

The globe will return to Home position with the solid blue light on when properly functioning.

We hope this information will help you resolve the problem. Take care.

My litter robot’s lights sequentially blink all the time. First blue, then yellow, then red. When I hit reset button, it will go back to solid blue light. But when the cycle runs, it won’t go back to home position and all lights started blinking. Any ideas?

If the Open Air unit cannot find Dump and/or Home position, the control panel will display 3 lights blinking. If you have recently disassembled your globe please advise.

Please remove the globe and check the black gear connected to the motor. When you press on the black gear with your finger, does it seem loose or free‐spinning? If so, please follow the instructions for tightening the set screw, here: http://litterrobot.kayako.com/Knowledgebase/Article/View/85/41/litter-robot--free-moving-gear-solution

When replacing the globe onto the base, make certain that the track around the outside of the globe is properly aligned into the groove on the base.

If the unit is plugged into a power strip, try plugging it directly into a wall. Sometimes the issue is caused by a fluctuating power supply, low voltage, or other power issues. If the globe is filled past the fill line remove litter so the fill line is exposed.

Can we ask the specifications on the adapter for the power supply you are using Correct Spec: 15VDC regulated adapter 400mA to 1,000mA.
[Note: If you are using a power supply with different specifications, the Litter‐Robot may appear to work properly; however, inadequate power can cause the unit to malfunction over time.]

  1. While powered on, unplug the unit from the back of the base.
  2. There is a pin in the jack where the small connector from the power supply is inserted. This pin should be split. Find something small and open it slightly if it is not. 3. Plug in the power supply and let your unit cycle. What happens? A blue solid light means the issue should be resolved.
If the unit does not return Home, or does not return Home with a solid blue light, please provide details of any lights on or blinking on the control panel.
*Are the lights blinking all at once or sequentially?
**If sequentially, please provide the colors in sequence.

If the Litter‐Robot does return Home with a solid blue light, there are no issues with the functionality of the unit at this time.

For the last 6 weeks the robot keeps stopping during the cycling and the yellow light blinks. Sometimes if I “gently” kick it it will resume, sometimes it won’t. I’ve tried unplugging it and I cleaned it today but it still does it. I have no idea how long it will sit like that, sometimes it’s mid-cycle and stalled when I come home. Sometimes I’ll look in on it and no one’s used it but it will be blinking yellow, then usually goes back to solid blue. There’s nothing touching it on any of the sides. Currently trying to make sure the bonnet is on securely. I have a feeling I’m coming close to the 18mon warranty, any other recommendations before I call Customer Service about returning it? My 3 cats and I LOVE it and NEED it in our lives- I just need it cycling properly! Thanks!

@Sara, Please watch this YouTube Video for the issue that you have.

Hi this morning my litter robot went into cycling mode and dumped all the cat poop along with all the cat litter in the below compartment, and when it came back to its normal position no cat litter was present. Can you help ??

Hi,
Did you press the empty button by mistake?
This will only happen if the empty button is triggered.

My open air litter robot 3 keeps leaking urine out of back crack and piles on floor

Hi, it looks like we’re having the same issue George above has. The buttons all appear to work normally, however when it “cycles” it only turns clockwise 1/4 turn and resets but doesn’t dump the litter. The light is solid yellow through this time and then returns to solid blue. This happens on a manual trigger and on an cat-senaed cycle.

The empty button still works as usual. We have tried unplugging, turning off, taking it apart and totally cleaning/reassembling with no luck. We’ve had the machine about 6 months now.

@Jody,
Can you contact us trough our Domestic robots customer service department. One of our specialist technician will assist you with this issue.

@Anna, it is possible that the motor something is jamming the motor or that the cat sensor is defective. Please contact us trough our support center.

The inner flap keeps falling down into he litter. It’s not rotating with the globe. I’ve tried realigning the black key in the back. I’ve tried rotating the black key in the back. I’ve tried having the flap on top of the inner lip guide. I’ve tried having the flap below the inner lip guide. None of those solutions have worked.
