Custom Rover build

Team Robotshop,

I would like your help to spec out a deployable rover that will ’sweep’ the pine straw off of my roof.

Requirements:
Low center of gravity
Total weight <= 5 lbs
Does not have to move too fast
Radio-controlled - I already have a Taranis X9D radio that I can use
Battery life of 20 minutes
Will have spinning bristles on the front
Camera / Transmitter

Bonus

  • body can be transformed on the fly from flat vehicle into the shop of a V to work in the peaks of the roof….
  • a magnetic switch/coupler that can be controlled from the radio.

Need help picking out:

Rover on board computer (if needed)
ESCs
Receiver
On/Off Switch
Hubs / Wheels or Tracks
LiPoBattery
Motor(s) for spinning brushes (motor must be able to be controlled by radio)
Help me with whatever I am missing

I have experience building drones / but none for a rover.

Hello @billthomas302!

That sounds like a nice project! I hope you’ll be sharing the results here

Rover on board computer (if needed)

It might not be necessary but if you are planning on adding any sensors (to detect walls or for obstacle avoidance for example) you will need a microcontroller / single board computer. These guides might give you some ideas:

I also recommend checking the entire How to Make a Robot tutorial series.

ESCs

That will depend on the motors you choose, once you know what motors you are going to use this guide should help you select the motor controller / ESC

Receiver

These receivers are compatible with your transmitter

On/Off Switch

You can find lots of options here, for example:

Hubs / Wheels or Tracks

You have lots of options, but this should help

LiPoBattery

Choosing one will depend on the motors you choose, but this guide will help you select one:

Motor(s) for spinning brushes (motor must be able to be controlled by radio)

That guide should help you calculating the approximate torque your motors will need, once you know that you can then choose the Motors and then the R/C DC Controllers or Brushless DC Motor Controllers.

I hope that helps!
