hi! i want to start building an actual robot, not one with kits, and i’m not sure where to start. can i please have some help?
What kind of robot? Wheeled or tracked rover, servo crawler, controlled arm, biped…?
What do you plan on using for the brain? Arduino?

I think you should check out the How to Make a Robot tutorial series. It is a complete tutorial that will guide you to the whole process of building a robot and luckily they chose a tracked platform as an example so I think it will really help you out 
Are you thinking autonomous or RC? Are you familiar with running sensors, servos and/or motors from an Arduino? If not, I’d say pick up an Arduino and some basic sensors and servos and start practicing making this happen especially if you plan on trying an autonomous set up.
Also, are you planning on using servos for propulsion or DC motors? If you’re going with DC motors, you’ll need a motor controller.

@henry_bot I’m not sure if you’re serious or not because certain things are lost through text (meaning that I don’t know your level of proficiency). But if you need it, there are also simulators out there for Arduino boards.
This one supposedly has both a web based simulator as well as a terminal based one.

@tonyd I’ve seen this in the past, it’s a very cool project, but can get expensive depending upon what you need to purchase.
