Senior Design Robotics Help

Hey Everyone! First time posting and I’m looking for a little guidance on how to tackle a robotics project for Senior Design. The scope from the professor is as follows:

Implement a ground-based robot that can connect identical straight pipe segments, return to the start point for additional segments, return to the end to continue and repeat.

Unfortunately nobody in my group has robotics experience and this is only a summer class so we need to get a grasp on robotics pretty quick.

We are assuming that the pipe is PVC and one end will be flared so the pipes just need to be pushed together. I imagine a system where two articulating arms are attached to a robot on wheels where one has to hold the pipe in a fixed position and the other has to insert a pipe into the fixed one. As far as making this whole system autonomous, I’ve done some research and found the Pixy camera that has line tracking capabilities and object recognition but it seemed like it only tracks lines within its field of view. For this it’d have to track a line and move the robot accordingly based on the line that is being tracked. Honestly this whole thing just seems like a programming nightmare to get everything to work together. Please let me know if I’m overcomplicating it or if there are some techniques/technologies within robotics that can help me make this easier. Thanks for any help provided!!!

Hello @JStreck6748, and welcome to the forum!

You can look at the Robots section and find a lot of interesting ideas.

Now, today one member posted its project:

It looks somewhat similar to your explanation. Two robotic arms that could maybe hold your pipes. It could be mounted on a platform with wheels and also cameras can be installed. Please have a look, and maybe you could get a better feeling if it’s too much complicated for your short summer period.

, thanks for the link! That is what I was thinking as far as a two arm setup. For this to work in my short time frame I need to purchase as many premade assemblies as possible so I think that Echo prototype might be a project in of itself. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction though!

no problem @JStreck6748

Anyway, have a look at premade assemblies here:
