Litter Robot III Open Air — cat pees on back paw now

My male cat does the same thing. Not only does he have litter caked on his back paws, but the litter does not clump properly because the pee is sliding down under the litter. The clumps stick to the black tub portion and I have to scrape off. I have tried different litters and a couple non-sticking sprays and nothing helps. I also had to remove the stairs as he would also pee on those by leaving his back end out.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated! .

Hi @Kscott319 !

As my colleague mentioned, you can try using the Litter-Robot Fence to force your cat to enter completely inside the Litter-Robot before doing his business.

We had a few customers trying it and having success.

Regarding litter types. Any clay based clumping litter should work. You can see some reviews here: https://www.catfooddispensersreviews.com/best-litter-for-the-litter-robot/

Got our litter robot today and we are already having the same problem. I was already a skeptical and this does not help. We have the extra fence and steps. Also the cats jump out from the box and do not use the steps bringing litter ALL over the floor. Not off to a good start.

Hi @Didadel !

You have a 90 day money back guarantee, so you can use that time for trying out different things to solve it.

Yea that’s the plan. They are starting to use it correctly, but now the issue is they can’t step down the steps and instead jump right out of the box tracking a lot of litter out with them all over the floor

My cat has been urinating on his feet too. It seems with the old bubble model, he could get his whole body inside. I guess he likes to keep his tail hanging out. The fence and hanging coins, or a string with a washer, didn’t work. He pees until his back paws get covered and then tracks it all over the floors and onto the furniture. It’s super expensive so I don’t want to throw it out. But I may have to go to some other box set up. The goal was to make my life easier, bit I’m spending more time cleaning now than if I just scooped litter.

I have been dealing with the same issue. I have tried everything. My cat also is constantly knocking the fence off. This is causing me more stress than making my life easy. I am constantly cleaning up pee, poo and litter.

Hello @Rashelleriot,

Welcome to RobotShop community.

We are sorry to hear that you are having this issue with your Litter-Robot.

Please make sure that the fence is installed properly so that the cat wouldn’t be able to knock it off easily.

You can use this video to show you how it’s properly installed:

I find our issue to be a combo of a LOT of what everyone has experienced, and I would ask that we stifle any non-constructive responses suggesting purchase of the LR Fence/Gate, the purchase of the LR ramp/stairs, or that any clumping litter will perform satisfactorily. I have the gate, I have the stairs, and I have unhappily tried many different litters (which I really don’t like doing that to the cats).

I have now placed a webcam in the cat room to monitor and interdict, as needed, all voiding events…convenient enough during COVID, but not sustainable for the future…

We have three cats, one female, two males, all between 5-9 years of age using the LR3 wifi. The youngest male urinates “high”, exhibiting the symptom where “pee is sliding down under the litter” a la Kscott319. He will also tend to not want to fully enter, and if the gate is not properly installed, urine can seep onto the petite triangular rubber litter pad atop the faecal drawer.

The steps, when in place, make it easier for him to stand half-in/half-out when he urinates a la MarkL, making a worse mess. Thus, the steps have been relegated to the attic. They do not facilitate a gentle dismount at all.

The female will enter after the youngest male’s high urination event, and will periodically step into the high urine spot and get wet clay embedded in her back paw. Fun times, fun times on that cleanup. Otherwise, the older male and the female use the LR3 properly.

Further, the clay-wads created from the high-latitude-voiding tend to defy gravity, sticking to the plastic surfaces whenever it can, surviving upwards of 3-5 cycles before dropping half-successfully down the chute. Half-successful.
My absolute favorite part of this is where the pissberg decides to fall at the precise moment in the cycle where the chute has rotated beyond the poop-aperture (the pooperture?) and scrapes its way over the seals and up the inside the outer globe before it falls chunkily back onto the screen, where it will embed.

I envisioned a cleaning and coating of PAM or silicone spray, but noted the experiences of Kscott319.

We have found the litter mat from LR to be excellent for containing the leaping spray (a la Chooliee).

Otherwise, I perceive the issues are of architecture and materials. The “bag” holding the litter needs to be deeper and hold more litter, needs to be less cohesive of wet clay, perhaps more pliable, the gate/fence could be much higher, and perhaps a screen that permits entrance and egress but discourages leaping departures. I want to add more litter, but that is not necessarily the answer given the litter fill line.

So, I feel y’all’s pain…thoughts?

Hey folks, regarding the jumping out of the robot, I have had the same issue. I solved it by taping a folded piece of cardboard to create a bit of a tunnel that my cat has to go through in order to get in and out of the bot: https://imgur.com/JN8c0kL I’m planning to leave it like that for a few months and then seeing if i can remove it without her reverting back to jumping.

I am also having the dirty back paw issue. My cat just goes in and immediately squats, so the urine is always dribbled down the front of the rubber. She’ll often step in it as she’s maneuvering around. I’m thinking of putting a backwards pointing thing on the fence to encourage her to go farther in before she can actually squat down.

Hello! I thought I should add my input here in the hopes that someone else finds it useful

So I have the exact same issue, my cat goes into the robot, wees all over her back foot, leaps out in a panic and runs around spreading wee everywhere (Thanks!)

I did a lot of reading, like a LOT of reading to see if I could find a solution that didn’t involve getting a different litter box as I really wanted to make the litter robot work. In the end I found some people saying that with litters that are too light, the cat can sink and won’t be able to squat properly, causing them not to be able to direct their wee properly and that a heavier litter was recommended.

Now I was initially using World’s Best Litter but people do say this is indeed a light litter. I switched just yesterday to a clay clumping litter
(This one for reference: https://www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/cats/cat_litter/catsan/448273)

Cat went in, Cat came out - No wee on her foot!

She’s only used it once so I need to try it for longer to see if it is really fixed but I thought I should post this as it may work for others too

Hello @TinTans,

Thank you for sharing your experience with your Litter-Robot’s issue.

Indeed, the clay clumping litter is recommended by the manufacturer and it works best with Litter-Robot.

We hope everyone else would read this and be able to fix their issues with their Litter-Robots.

Have a lovely evening, stay safe.

Sincerely,

Both of my cats are finally using the LR, but one is having this issue. I just invested in Exquisicat litter. Seems to be worse. Any litter suggestions? I’m also trying the cat nip spray. Fingers crossed

Hello @Ryan83,

Welcome to RobotShop community.

We are sorry to hear that you are having the same issue with your Litter-Robot.

You can try “World’s best cat litter”, it has been recommended by a lot of customers and shown good results.

Let us know if you have any further questions.

Have a lovely day, stay safe.

Although my cat was peeing on herself because of using “World’s best cat litter” as it was too light

Personally I would recommend Catsan Ultra Clumping Cat Litter (clay):

as it is heavier and works ways better than World’s Best. It also doesn’t stick to the rubber like I was finding World’s Best was doing.

My cat does love to scoop this right out the litter when she’s covering though, so installing a fence seems to help keep it inside

Hi, did you find a solution? I am also having the same problem with my female cat. She’s squatting near the entrance of the Litter Robot and pee squirts out from her onto the fence and the floor!!!

OMG! You had me at pissberg! That made me LOL. I have all the same complaints. They honestly aren’t worth the money. The concept is genius but the engineering is not. Youre right, the drawer should be deeper. My “full” alarm is continuous - even when the drawer is empty. Im constantly resetting the app all day long. The drawer could slide in much more elegantly. Someone else is going to come up with a far better product & it will probably even be cheaper! i cant wait… I’m always scraping litter off the plastic and my cat leaves litter ALL over the house because he pees on his left foot and it cakes onto his fur. You can almost see how ashamed he feels constantly dragging urine/litter around. Then I have to wrestle him to let me clean it. Im also at my wits end.

I wanted to share my experience so far in this post. I’m actually exhausted of trying to teach my oldest cat (10yr old) to use the LR. This is the 1-month timeline:

  • got LR, and followed the suggested ways to adapt the cat to use it.
  • cat finally started getting in, using properly-ish
  • then the 1st issue started: she would pee in her paws, OR pee on the inside walls and have it run down to her back paws, as she pees a lot. Then feel ashamed as she would come out with clay boots (and track the whole place).
  • that led to the next issue: now the cat feels dirty, dumb, and notices our frustration, refraining from wanting to use LR. Now, she starts peeing/pooping beside on the outside of LR.
  • so we try worlds best litter. It works for the tracking (clay boots) issue, but only if we put the cat in. So we though: she must be having a hard time to get in! $80 later and a few days wait, and now we have the ramp! Weeeee
  • nope! The ramp becomes the new pee spot as she can now get in, but leaves her butt out and pees before she can make it in, then she goes in to poop, if needed.
  • ok… let’s try the fence! Nope, nothing new. Woke up this morning to pee on the ramp… (Like the prev entire week).
  • last straw? Catnip spray? Like, i’m working more than with my old litter box. And i have a lot less money in the bank. I’d love this product if I only had my 1-yr old cat, he is flawless using LR. But my older cat is making my life miserable. Older cat is frustrated, I’m too. I don’t want to despise m oldest friend and companion over what seems to be a vicious cycle of unfortunate events.

Is there anything anyone here would suggest further? More so the ones that had issues much longer than their original comments? The support here has been great, and the 3-month policy is very much relieving. But you know… one does not invest such kind of cash on a machine to then jus return it. I just want to conquer these issues with my cat, be supportive and help her to just use it. I’m sure she will appreciate if that ever happens. No cat likes a dirty box, and LR def keeps that litter neat.

Thank you all in advance and for taking the time to read my thoughts.
