Hunter MiniVTail

Eric

Yeah I have some 10A SimonK ESCs from RCMart which actually go better with the RCX motors, but you didn’t have any and I was trying to use Lynxmotion products, btw I get one cool branded Lynxmotion and 3 generic red ones. Most of the larger quads I am using 1000Kv - 800Kv motors on, which generally need the 20 - 30a range ESC. I will probably save these Lynxmotion ESCs for later and solder up my 10A on this guy, my power dist boards are bit too bulky so wire up a little octopus setup.

Check it, I have some RCX 10a ESC (G Series - SimonK flashed) super cheap - $7.99 each. Hooked up to the RCX 1804 2400Kv motors - also super cheap - $8.99.
The motors mount nicely when you just flip the motor mount side with the motor hole. The thickness of the frame required using a washer before putting in the screws that came with the RCX 1804.

There are also some nice ZMR Power Distribution boards, it is smaller size than the HobbyKing one I have, so I soldered that up with the RCX 10a ESCs, added a JST connection to plug my FPV or LED into.
Actually while waiting for the Flip MultiWii to come in, should be tomorrow, probably going to add another Jst connector on the front, for some forward facing LEDs

So I added my own straps for the battery, the straps that come with the Vtail mini are the same that come with the 500, they are just too long to use. Tomorrow the MultiWii comes and I just need to pick up some more male 2mm bullet connectors to solder the rest of the motors and pick up a receiver for this guy.

Should be flying it this weekend

Some videos of my first flights with the Mini. I really enjoy the Vtail 500, but I like the mini better, these 250mm range multirotors are pretty wicked.

Just need your own receiver to add to the mix

Now the build:

  1. The normal assembly instructions need updated for the motor mount. You will swap all the plates that have the motor opening with the motor
mount plates. So on the back vtail you will have the motor opening facing up, with the motors facing down screwed in to the motor mount (see attached image)
The front motors will have the motor opening plate facing down with the motors setting on top.
  2. The RCX 1804 motors will mount nicely with the screws, I found adding in a 2mm washer worked to have them screw in nicely without going to far in
    towards the motor windings.
  3. Power distribution board from RCX fits in nicely. Just solder your ESC power leads onto the board. I think used the 2mm bullet connectors - female ends on the
ESC, male ends on the motors - which is typical, if you wanna try to swap out motors this will help in the future. The distribution board sits
nicely under plate for the Flip MWC 1.5, which mounts perfectly on the 4 hex standoffs provided
  4. The battery straps I found to be the same size as the ones on my Vtail 500 and just too long, so I cut my own.

The 1300mAh 3S work great, I got a couple of the Luminier 1300mAh 3S 35C batteries & some Turnigy Nano-tech 1300mAh 3S 25C batteries, I
used the XT-60 for my power connector - which both batteries come with.

I have a video posted up a while ago that I did today with all my FPV gear on it and the Mobius Action cam and the quad still flew pretty well
I take most of the stuff off, but the Pilot Cam to do some Acro stuff.

Time to try out some new motors - I got my hands of some of the elusive SunnySky 2300Kv motors thanks to Stone Blue Airlines. I will be trying these out on the Hunter Vtail Mini first.
Going to do some videos this week with take off, dropping throttle, catch, etc to compare the RCX 1804s against the SunnySky. Will be running my full FPV load setup.

Sound interesting…

Okay so here is an update, I have been messing around with a few things, so been slacking on my Mini Vtail. First issue SunnySky Motors are just too big the wide pancake profile actually conflicts with the hex bolts for the frame (see my pic), so plan B, I swapped the SunnySky motors on my QAV250 for the FXC1806-14 2300Kv motors that I had on it. I was flying around FPVing on the QAV250 with those sunnysky motors, I love them. Anyway I got sidetracked by building a Titan Tricopter from Fortis Airframes, after some messing around with some 1000Kv & 800Kv motors I had with an older Talon Tricopter frame, so this past weekend I did get back to finishing up the motor swap on the Vtail.

These motors work great, now they are $40 versus under $10 for the RCX motors, but honestly they are so worth it. Plenty of power to do acro, I even dropped down to using the 2 blade props, these are the gemfan, but I think I am going to switch to the HQProps since they are more solid, less flex.

I am going to take it out tonight to the field, but was messing in the backyard doing some flips while I cooked burgers - check the vid

Very nice, again i can just say thanks for all those testings…
I have not yet tested those RCX, would you think it worth to modify the frame to make it fit ?

Eric

The RCX motors do fit, with the motor mounts arms reversed. Have you found any motors that actually fit in the 21mm motor hole?? I haven’t found any that small and the RCX are pretty tiny. I have had the RCX motors on and for someone just starting out they are great, enough lift and they are cheap to replace at $8.99 a piece.

I wanted to step this up to the SunnySky X2204 motors, which are about $20 a piece, and they perform great, If you look at my above post, you could fix the issue with those by setting up flush mounted screws for the frame - you can see how the large pancake profile of the SunnySky hang over and you can screw them down because of the hex head of the bolts - basically the motor mount arms are a bit too small for most motors. Now the T-Motor 1806, will fit that okay with the flipped mount, they are 23mm around so they won’t fit down the motor mount holes. But these $42 motors from getfpv work awesome, they are branded Lumenier but I am sure they are T-Motors rebranded - at least for the size, spec, design and price they match up.

the only thing you could do is increase the diameter of the motor mount, I don’t mind the flipped setup that much, but the back would provide a slight bit more clearance if you could mount the motor up in

Anyone else playing with the mini?

I did some more video - having fun with this guy, working on my acro skillz

youtube.com/watch?v=x-YlD6hC8Os

My recommendation, do not skimp on your motors - those Lumenier / T-Motors are worth the price just for the performance and quality

Eric

Where is the mini Vtail replacement parts like the 400/500???

I love flipping and I keep snapping off those little legs. I need to order more of those and stock up on arms. Having too much fun with this little guy, I may need to cool it and do some FPV for a while until I can get replacements. I have another video - which I am ticked about I didn’t think I was filming with the GoPro but I was, so I turned it off, then did some of my best flips, some crazy diagonal, some flips while zipping forward and back. Only to find when I checked the GoPro it was not recording.

I need legs, or need to build a take off stand, I am down to my last 2 legs from having the second frame.

Check this just found an interesting new motor coming out from MyRCMart:

myrcmart.com/rcx-13062-2300k … m04dtqrt21

These things are crazy small and super cheap

This look like a nice little screamer…
People have good results with Suppo Motors, this one

Whisper: We will have Suppo soon…

Eric

I have used suppo motors on some of my planes, they are pretty good motors for the price. I got your PM, but I cannot reply back or send PMs, I don’t think I like the RobotShop version, preferred the older forums Lynxmotion had.

Anyway to answer the question, with the Vtail mini and actual the larger size, the landing legs snap off quite easily with any rough landing (aka crash). I haven’t broken much else on the mini but the legs. It would be cool to be able to order leg parts, I will probably get another frame to have more spare arms, but I seem to be eating up the legs practicing acro stuff - most of the time it’s just a rough bounce off the grass that will do it

Can you get me some info about the PM ?
When you click “Reply” on top of the message it’s not working ?
Since it’s a new forum, it might have issue, that’s why i ask to fix as much things as we need.

As for the landing, i had been playing with something in my head for a while…

Okay so PM - I have no reply option button at all, at the top I can Move to folder, next or previous PM, then at the bottom of the message I can see Profile, report message, delete message, that is all.

Now on to the landing legs, that looks pretty cool, but let me tell you something I have learned flying and crashing doing my FPV the Titan Tricopter from Fortis Airframes - killer build concept zip ties and o-rings, I have had some hard crashes, many, broke 1 prop total so far, booms, landing legs, everything fine - replaced a ■■■■ ton of zip ties, but who cares. So how about a zip tie concept for the landing legs, let those zips snap  So try this, take that design you posted, make 2 notches on the upper arm connected to the quad, and two notches on the leg sticking down, 2 4" zip ties hold the leg to the upper arm, that should work nicely!!!

I love this little guy, So the acro is way different than x or + quad, but it’s so cool, Front flips are sweet, watch my vid, I basically flip up in the air and catch, now back flip on the other hand needs some room. You can see me take out leg 1 (front right leg), then I break the back leg, I prop it up on the base at the field. I am messing with OpenSCAD and working on a launching stand I can print with the 3D Printer, so I don’t need legs , but without legs I will probably start breaking the arms.

Here is my vid, now what I am really upset about is my coolest flips are not there, freak’n GoPro, I thought I was not recording when I took off, so I reach up to hit it, well turns out I was so while I was mimicking (most sloppy, some pretty smooth) Warthox flying forward / side flips I didn’t get them. I did one that I was really excited about I was zipping forward and when diagonal pitch/roll on the stick, freak’n Vtail looks crazy, I pulled a double and landed, very excited to show it off, only to hate my GoPro :frowning:

youtube.com/watch?v=jv4hT9X94Qs

So I of course will probably snap off the last 3 legs I have this weekend trying to replicate what I was pulling off yesterday.

** NOTE ** because of cool tech, I am an acro cheater - using the awesome Horizon mode on the MultiWii  - I actually am not bad flying full acro (no autolevel) style, but the horizon mode, let off the sticks auto level is hellishly less intense

PS - Everyone should pick up one of these mini vtails, it will make you very happy

Yes, it of course make sense.
Not sure now you are doing it in your head, but i will look at a way to make them snap…

whisper… bellow…

Here is my view of the PM message, look at the arrow showing the “Reply” button.
You don’t have anything there ?

Yeah on mine, there is no print view, forward pm, quote or reply options, it starts with the textbox to select for Move to Folder. I will try to render out something 3D for what I mean with the legs.

Hmmm, that motor looks somewhat RCX 1804 with lynxmotion on the side, or could that be a sunnysky rebranded? Will you give up the goods. I will of course pick up Lynxmotion branded motors

RCX is not the maker of the RCX brand of motor.
Those are buy from one of our motor supplier and are probably the same.

Can you take a Print-Screen of your PM page ?
