Connecting Motor Kit with Rc Receiver

Hello all,
I am considering purchasing the motor and wheel kit. However, I need to make sure there is a way to connect these dc motors to be driven by rc input. I am wanting to mount these on an rc lawn mower. So these would be my main drive wheels and I am seeking help on how these could work in this instance. What size of batteries could they handle? Motor controller? Other components required to make this kit work for my situation?

Thank you so much in advance for your help!

Hello @Natemallard and welcome to the forum,

Could you share the product code or link to the kit you are referring to? There are many options available in the store.

I also think these tutorials could be useful for you:

Yes. Here is the link to the product I was referring to. It is the two 12v bldc motors with wiring and wheels.

Ok! Since you mentioned you want to control it with R/C you’ll need a compatible motor controller, you can find many options in the R/C DC Controllers section.

The kit you mentioned has 2 DC motors with the following specs:

  • Working voltage: 12V
  • Stall current: 3.6A
  • No load current: 0.23A
  • Rated torque: 10kg.cm (139oz.in) -> Make sure this will be enough for your mower

In order to choose a motor controller, you have to consider the nominal voltage and the continuous current of your motors. As the specs of the motors included in the kit you mentioned don’t mention continuous operating current, a simple rule of thumb is to estimate it at about 25% of the stall current, so let’s say it’s 1A.

So you’ll need a controller that can work at 12V and can provide 1A continuously and if possible 3.6A (or more) peak in case the motors stall. However, since you mentioned you’re building a rc lawn mower I strongly suggest checking this tutorial:

That tutorial gives some very useful tips for choosing wheels and motors, for example estimating the rpm and torque needed by a custom mower and also mentions that you should take into account the ground clearance and that affects the diameter of the wheel you need.
