Like I said, if you greesed it with oil after sanding off the rusty parts it wont rust Im not saying your wrong, Im letting you know what you could have done to prevent you from having to repaint the metal everytime
well, i dont repaint the metal every time, i put a base coat on to prevent rust, its the same as greasing it, its my way of dealing with the rust, instead of greasing it
also, i think you said earlier something along the lines of “i would have painted it right away to prevent rusting”
A bit of surface rust would do no harm, no need to oil or grease it. Painting however, should be the one of the very last steps. It’s no big deal, what you did was fine but in the future you don’t need to be quite so concerned about painting it at the first sign of rust as it should be considered only temporary.
First thing, Chunga, way cool tensioner. You found a problem, worked out a solution, built a working model, and now you’re making improvements on it. In like a week… Good job! Some can nit-pick away at this or that, but you are out there cutting, drilling, etc., you’re getting it done! 8)
On painting cold rolled steel. The only thing I have ever seen that can coat steel without worrying about rust is powder coat. Seems like anything else will not bond well and eventually rust. I don’t understand the goal of putting grease or oil on a surface you want to paint in the future. It just seems counter productive, because it has to be removed come time to apply that primer and paint. If the peeps want to discuss painting steel I recommend starting a separate thread and leaving Chunga alone.
Ty for the comment about the tensioner, lol, im not nit picking cause im just a wee bit impatiaent , lol and as to the time frame, i drew up and designed the tensioner just 2 days ago xD on sunday , i finished the models at…2:30 this morning, assmbly took about 10-20 minutes depencding on how well behaved the spring was
thats was my train of thought jim, i just couldn’t put it into words, grease isn’t really fun to remove, its hard to get it all off, and like you said, counter productive, this way i will not have to spend so much time painting it and i dont have the trouble of putting on so many coats. As to the spray paint not sticking to the steel well, it seems ok to me so far, idk if its been long enough, but its definatley not easy to get it off
Chunga, I hope you didn’t think I was nit-picking. I just wanted to set your mind at ease by letting you know that the rusting steel should not be of any great concearn.
You are doing a fantastic job and best of all it is your design that came from your head. It’s very rewarding when you have a creation come alive that’s all your own doing.
Real brief - I did some trial designs but I don’t know if they will be good enough. I will post them in a new thread tonight and let others see the several different styles.
Sorry Chunga, hope you don’t mind me stepping on your turf for a few quick words.
lol, np, i have some pictures of the new tensioners, and i must say, they look MUCH better than the last ones and function much better, to finish them up i just need to wait till my dad gets home with the drill and put the nylon roller in, and ill be golden
Well, i was down in Jersey for this past week, so i wasn’t able to get any done, but i will be be finishing up the track tensioners this week and i will also seal everything off with caulhking (sp), i have waited so long because i need to finish drilling all the mounts and stuff
progress is going to come to a crawl soon though, football starts a week from this coming monday, and i have 5 more books to read for school (i thought summer was for vacation and relaxation, not more work. 1 book down, 5 to go ) then school in september, oh well, im busy busy busy
Oh boy Football i can’t wait.
