Changing the Forum Style

I just checked my Firefox browser settings before starting up the forum, and bumped up the text size. I didn’t notice any text sizes on other websites. But going from 16 to 17 (tools options text size) did the trick!

Firefox has be updated recently (on all three machines that I commonly use), and this “day” machine is the only one that suffered.

Thanks!

Alan

That’s weird, but changing the browser text size was going to be my next suggestion. Good thing it worked!

And weirder then that, I played with the text size a little more; and visited a few other “usual” sites, and finally tried setting back to 17. All’s the same again! I did notice that different text responded differently to the size changes, sometimes not changing. But all’s fine now.

Thanks!

Alan

Hi Snailkeeper,
Thank you for explaining how to change the forum style. Let me tell that I have join today itself. You have not posted any comment since a fortnight. You seem to be a knowledgeable person so you should update this forum with new concepts. On a daily basis many people must be signing up. Your help and assistance can help them to do their work more efficiently. Your instruction I have saved in my computer and I am looking forward towards another instructions. Thanks.

The old style is way better. I was hating the change, but now that I’ve switched it’s much better.

I’d still like to see a clearer distinction between where the sticky posts end and the new posts begin. It would be nice if there were some kind of divider there.

I understand your concern, and will look into the issue. I can’t promise anything, but I will see what can be done to better separate the announcement/sticky posts.

Why the shift to putting tutorials into the forum? They were much more usable in PDF format.

A few reasons, such as ease of receiving feedback and the fact that we can quickly create and post one without messing with the website code.

…Wait, when did we have PDF tutorials? :open_mouth:

This is the main thing. While I’m working on setting up the new website, James can create a tutorial without having to bother me at all. Fewer delays in creating new tutorials this way. I imagine they will be put into HTML format once I am done with the new site and have time to convert them.

Funny, I have several PDF files.

Maybe it’s the old SSC-32 manual I’m thinking of. I just checked the first tutorial I came to, and yes, it’s web-based pages. That probably required a lot of “editing” into HTML pages (or whatever they’re called). I get it now.

I just print off whatever I’m going to study. Guess I just like professional “manual looking” manuals. But making manuals is probably more work.

Lots of extra “junk” at the top and bottom of the Forum version when I print it out.

Actually it looks like one could cut and paste into a word document, and clean the presentation up quite a bit.

I would put a proper header into the “document”, and instigate some sort of numbering system, like a “build” number.

Just my thoughts. The information content is still there.

Remember this is only temporary.

Only temporary? Ah! got it.

Dear Snailkeeper,

Is there some feature that can be activated in the Forum which would be similar to bookmarking topics but which would enable us to “bookmark” individual responses within topics?

Some of the topics have gone on for several years and have stretched to many pages. Within them some of the responses may be pure drivel [it takes one to know one] but others especially detailed explanations by the Gurus are pure gold. Finding them, however, can be like looking for diamonds among broken glass. I, for one, would certainly benefit from an ability to flag them individually.

Thank you,

Im not sure there is a bookmarking feature but if there was id like to know how, so a great question there Ted.

one way i keep track of posts is to copy the URL for the post i may intend to refer to later.

First 'find the post you want. then click on the post subject tag. (1)
Then copy the URL (2) into Notepad. and maybe title the url so you know what its for.
I have a note pad on my desktop full of useful URL’s. I then title the notepad with something that resonates its contents and place it in the appropriate folder to do with that subject.
(My organised chaos) lol

here is a crude image of those instructions. lol

Thanks, Jonny, your notepad idea works great; I tested it with your response. Actually, I am using Notepad++, a free downloadable text editor that allows programming in several computer languages. Now if I could only get the desired address to save as an active URL link, then I wouldn’t have to copy and paste it into a browser in order to call up the original file. Anyone?

You could always scrap the notepad idea as right click on link in the browser then save it as html so it becomes an icon. Also if you wanted you could open a new folder and then store any images from that html in the folder.

EDIT… Humm there is an option for bookmarking but we dont seem to have the icon installed or is not allowed in the Board Features?..
Snailkeeper?

Bookmarking is done on a topic basis, not per post. There should be a “Bookmark Topic” button near the subscribe button (located at the top left on the subsilver2 style).

Thanks, Beth,

I found the topic bookmark, and it works. The problem is it is not good enough. Some of these topics are enormous, and there needs to be some way to quickly locate single posts. I was hoping there was some feature in the forum which could be enabled to let that happen but bow to your knowledge that there isn’t.

In lieu of, I find INNERBREED’s method workable.

Thanks again,

Bookmarking might be OK, and I save URLs to topics of interest like Jonny, but what I’d really like to see is a “save” button.

Alan KM6VV

I mentioned that I use Notepad++. Originally it was not saving the URLs as active links. I’m not sure what I did, but in playing with its options, it is now saving them as dynamic links which makes locating the post only a double-click away. I’m now also using this method to recall articles from my oneline subscription to Britian’s Garden Rail Magazine. Works great. :stuck_out_tongue:

So thanks, INNERBREED, good on ya, mate! Oops, crossed the wrong pond.
