As for your question, indeed, it can be used to play chess, as one member showed here:

It really depends on how you want to add “AI” as it’s not officially supported.

If you need a robot arm closer to $50 USD:

However note that the range of motion is far more limited, as are the degrees of freedom, so it’s unknown how you wouldpick up the chess pieces and place them so they are vertical. The load they can support is also limited. Ex:
