Building a Computer

Who? Chris? Hes a pretty cool guy

Ehhh, its not really stupid of them. I mean, the only real difference between the two processors is one uses DDR while other uses DDR2. They added an extra pin so people won’t get confused and try forcing it in. Its not a major difference. Not something really worth releasing a whole new line for. It was part of their K8 generation. Their K10 generation will be called Phenom so you won’t get confused  Just for you

I meant that about the whole lynx forums, you guys know your stuff.

Ok, but first, this is the proccessor I thought I bought:

geeks.com/details.asp?invtid … CD&cpc=SCH

note the specs says supports 939 sockets. I bought the AM2 instead, Guess I goofed up on this one! :frowning:

Im calling geeks.com first thing tomorrow to see what the best option is to exchange my proccessors.

Dont send it back just yet. Rumor has it that a BIOS update to version 1.1(11) adds CPU support for the X2 939 pin AMD Athlon 64. Give me a day to find out if this is true.

cpu-upgrade.com/mb-ABIT/UL8.html

I believe your chosen CPU is a go.

Chris

I think you misunderstood, I accidentally bought an athlon 64 X2 that supports AM2 socckets instead of an athlon 64 X2 which supports the 939 socket. Either that or you confused me

You posted link is a 939

buy this one instead

newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6819103052

yup, the proccessor I should have bought, but accidentally bought the AM2 socket instead

Im going to have to call geeks.com and ask them what the best option is to exchange or get my money back and order that proccessor

ahh - I see . It shouldnt be too much of a problem

newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6819103052

they can be found at numerous places for mid 60’s

yes, that is the same price at geeks.com. the AM2 proccessor was 77, hopefully, they can exchange it for the 939 socket proccessor and refund the $14.00

I don’t know if geeks does this or not but many computer junk places hit you with a 15-20% restock fee when you order something by mistake and return it. Just be prepared if this comes up, maybe they’ll wave it if you are a 1st time or regular customer… or mention that you are posting the details of your build on a highly public forum frequented by geek-ey types.

UPDATE: I still haven’t heard back from Geeks.com. Yesturday I phoned them and they told me to e-mail them, than they emailed me saying they sent my message to the technicians (?) and now the technicians have yet to reply. Im starting to get frustrated with their customer support. Hopefully they can sort this thing out. All I am asking for is an RMA number so I can return the proccessor after I recieve it. :astonished:

**UPDATE: Today I recieved the mainboard, wireless router, videocard, and software. Cudos to Chris for personally delivering it. It was a pleasure dealing with him! The equipment was in brand-new condition, most of it still in the original packaging! Thanks a lot, it was greatly appreciated.

Today I called Geeks.com and they issued me an RMA number so I can return the proccessor. I will be getting store credit back, so I will use this to buy the AMD Athlon 64 X2 (the one that supports 939  ) and the hardrive.

Im excited and eagar for the rest of the gear to come! Have a safe trip Chris!

Any Updates?

No

school right?

UPDATE: Sorry for this delayed update. Its hard to keep track of everything when you have two or more projects running in the background. Anyways, I recieved my digital camera and computer parts from geeks.com a week ago (and the shipping charges almost gave me a heart attack at 16! )

I assembled the Motherboard, Disk drive, Power supply, front/rear switches, front USB, cooling fans, and RAM (I hope im doing this right  )

I still have to return the dual core CPU, and purchase a harddrive. When I have done so and connected them Im assuming I can turn on the computer and begin to program it with the OS and drivers. Once complete I intend to add some cathode lights to the case ( I have an extra 3 pairs lying around) and possibly modding a window in the side (done to another one of my cases) and adding clear lexan in the back (again, some lying around)…

I’ll upload pics after lunch of the setup. Hopefully this can reveal any wiring mistakes I may have made. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks.

Im not too worried about that. Im not getting a Terrabyte or anything ( I wouldn’t use all that up in a lifetime! :open_mouth: ). Im going to go simple with about 200GB of hard drive, mainly for gaming and homework. I plan on keeping this computer completely organized.

AHhhhhh,I really wish i had one of those 2TB hard drives :unamused:

…and then you can add a bass box, and a pair of fuzzy dice, and neon floaters, and a DVD player with LCD screens on the sun visors, and a fiber-optic starfield headliner, and a chrome-plated license plate frame shaped like barbed wire, and hydraulics so that it bounces up and down when you’re stopped at a traffic light! :unamused:

Got any more idea’s :open_mouth:
