WiPort seems to be a popular topic on these forums, so here’s my question:
After a little setup, I have an ad hoc network working with my PC. I can send serial information back and forth just fine. Now I want to be able to send serial data from any PC on the internet, to my WiPort and vice versa. This requires me to connect the WiPort to the router. But, I can’t get that to work.
Via direct serial cable connection to the WiPort (development board) I set the network name and the encryption key, but Lantronix’s Device Installer can’t find any WiPort’s on the network. So, it isn’t making a connection with the router.
Does anyone have any tips on doing this? I have succesfully put the WiPort on my network with an ethernet cable into the router (if that helps at all).
I’m not sure I follow exactly what you are asking. 1st thing to make note of though is that the normal WiPort can’t use both the RJ-45 and the WLAN at the same time, although the WiPortG can, so depending on which model WiPort youhave you might need to unplug the RJ-45 connection.
If you are trying to go through a router you should be sure you don’t have some kind of firewall type thing blocking the redirector.
Some things you can do to help the device installer are to verify the router has assigned an IP address to the WiPort (DHCP), or if using a static IP it sees it as connected. You should be able to feed the device installer that IP address.
Also, in setting up the redirector it is really important the serial port setting match and there is one checkbox that seems to default the the wrong setting, raw mode or something maybe? sorry, it’s been a few weeks since I have looked at this. anyway, the setup tutorials both at Lynxmotion and WiBotics have this information so hopefully you can pull those and find the missing bit.
I kind of have mine all apart at the moment (project creep) but if you can’t dig it up post back and I’ll wire stuff up enough so maybe I can be of more help.
Yeah, I have the setting for WLAN, not RJ45. RJ45 isn’t plugged in either.
I haven’t tried using the port redirector yet since the WiPort isn’t showing up in Device Installer yet.
Maybe this will help clear up my question. I want to establish a wireless connection between the WiPort and my router. After setting the “Network Name” and “Encryption Key” it should automatically connect to the router right?
After I have this working, I will open up a port on my router so the WiPort can communicate with a java applet over the internet.
Sorry, if this is confusing. I’m new to wireless networking and have to admit I don’t really know what I’m doing yet
