While Boston Dynamics has faced competition from the likes of Unitree, ANYbotics and other engineering companies that have created quadrupled robots, Boston Dynamics often stands out from the rest thanks to its expertise, technology and cool yet sophisticated lifelike robots that often captivates its audience's attention. Everyone seems to be obsessed with Boston Dynamics and for good reasons. Here's why:
Nice article Mariane. I wonder what the cost will be for a Spot? Perhaps fwilk’s SpotMini-Clone here would be a better buy. I also saw another mini-spot out there roaming around that seems quite sophisticated.
Thanks Jim! Some sources say between $ 5000 to 15000 (but it’s just speculations). I guess it depends on what you want to use it for; what extra you will add, like an arm, etc. @fwilk spot would be a nice companion; I think I would build one instead of buying one ahah! You are referring to another mini-spot? If you have a link I’d love to see it for comparison
Hey @demej00@Mariane
hmm… i heard some rumours talking about 40k+ for a BD SpotMini… but it’s all rumours, we’ll see
Building an OpenSource SpotMicoAI would be definately cheaper … but BostonDynamic’s SpotMini is already working.
… to be honest it is just not comparable. BD’s SpotMini is a very powerful platform with awesome hardware, strong enough to do really cool stuff.
With SpotMicroAI we try to build something with affordable (cheap) hardware and 3DPrinting to do research on how to control four-legged Robots and hopefully have a working OpenSource RobotDog-Platform some day. But there’s still a lot of work to be done.
So if you want to USE a robot - and can afford it - you better buy a BostonDynamics SpotMini. Would love to see some videos!!
If you want to find out how all this works and you are interested in hardware/coding/ML/RL you should definately join our Project!
The SpotMicroAI-Community (yeah, we are a community now) are working on a Project-Page to bundle up all the questions/answers/solutions in one place: http://spotmicroai.org but it’s still under construction / very empty.
So for now you can find everything here:
