Which Roomba 530?

I bought (and can return to Target until May 6) two different Roombas (same price-- $150) which both say they are Model 530. I sent this msg to customer service, but maybe somone on this forum can enlighten me…

One says it is Model 530 and has–
Voice Demo
6-arm red corner brush
Red CHM with wavy 3-row brush (thick amount of bristles)
Large black and grey dock
Yellow brush cleaning tool
Large, grey adjustable virtual walls
UPC 8-5381653001-4
KYN 5300107110301102752 sticker
Instruction book dated 2007

One says it is Model 530 (Model 531 printed on bottom) and has–
No voice demo
3-arm yellow corner brush
Green CHM with straight 4-row brush (thinner amount of bristles)
Small, black dock
Red brush cleaner
Small, black virtual walls
UPC 8-8515500002-6
KYN 531010909100600233 sticker
SGSEA/070388 on bottom
Instruction book dated 2009

Which is the newer or better model to keep? I ran both-- batteries lasted about 1 hour and 10 minutes. The one without the voice demo (531?) was dumber in that it got stuck and needed to be rescued 5 or 6 times. The other never did. Is that “dumb” luck or a difference in software? I’m confused because the newer book came with the machine with lesser-- wimpier-seeming-- stuff.

Thank-you for your help.

I don’t know if this is helpful, but…

I have had a 530 for over a year. It developed a fault involving the bump plate sensor. After shopping around the replacement part was available for between $65 - $95 and a clear replace guide was even harder to find. Not wanting void a warranty of spend money on a repair I would mess up, I called iRobot. I then found that my bot was no longer under warranty and they did not offer a repair service. They were offering a 531 as a replacement unit. The replacement unit would use the same docking station and battery as the 530 I had.

I don’t know if this means they (iRobot) believe the 531 is better, or if it is simply the newer and they have more left in the warehouse.

Thanx for the useful information.
Allthough i’m quite handy with dissecting roomba i’d rather leave it to the service center as long as i have warranty left. I still have one year.
With your approval i’ll send yours and vics message with roomba in the box today. It might come in handy for the boys there as vic said.

The battery is the original battery for the Roomba. It is the Ni-Mh battery and it is at least two years old. This morning I removed the battery and it had a resting charge of 15.1 VDC. The Roomba was unplugged all night. I did not have a tail light but I used a license plate lamp bulb across the battery terminals and measured the voltage. The voltage dropped to Wedding Hairstyles For Curly Hair 13.38 VDC.

Looks like I’m not getting a replacement. I assume that this will be a refurb of some kind?

Hi Loscar,

The 531 is the newer robot as far as production date goes and therefore would be the best choice. Please see the posts above for the differences between these robots.

Hi kathy-momx8,

Welcome to the RobotShop forum.

We received and answered your ticket that was sent through the support center yesterday with this same question; we will repost the answer here:

"iRobot has been recently updating some of their models. The 531 is the newer robot as far as production date goes. The main differences are:

The red CHM is the older style, and will pack up with hair inside it’s brush gears faster than the green one. As well, the newer brushes will pick up debris better overall.

The virtual walls have changed as well, they now have gone to compact, or auto-virtual walls on the 531; it depends on which model you have.

The brush cleaning tools also change according to the type of brush that comes with the robot.

As far as intelligence of the robot, we don’t have access to the manufacturer’s programming, but we know of no software change so far.

If you really prefer the voice demo, keep the 530 (though it’s not really necessary to use the robot or to learn what all the different features on the robot are). But considering the differences between the brush decks, we’d recommend the 531 because of it’s green brush deck, it will last you longer.

One thing to note: The 531 usually comes with auto-virtual walls, and they are only compatible with certain models of Roomba. As well, the difference between the ‘0’ and ‘1’ models of certain Roombas changes as you move from model to model. So far, the 530 and 531 don’t have too many differences, but other models have larger gaps in what the old ones would do versus the newer models."

A few other things we can point out to you:
The 530 and 531 may have different batteries. You may want to remove the bottom plate of the robot (you have to remove the side ‘corner’ brush first) to see what kind of battery you have in the robot. The 530, since it was manufactured in 2007, may have an APS battery in it (they’re yellow). These are the best batteries available for the Roomba. The 531 likely has a standard black or blue NiCD battery that should run fine, but will not run as long nor last as long as the APS yellow battery. That being said, the 530 is from 2007, and if it was sitting on the shelf at a distributors for a long time, it may be the battery has aged somewhat on the shelf. You would need to test the robots with their respective batteries to see which one lasts longest, or if either battery is running for shorter than normal.

The side brushes are different too. The older 530 has the six-arm version, which would break easier. iRobot upgraded the brush to the newer 3-arm design with harder rubber/plastic, so the brushes would last longer.

So there you have it. Some minor differences are the virtual walls, side brush, and the voice demo, while major differences would be the battery and brush deck. From the info we have now, we’d lean towards the 531 due to the green brush casing, but you must also take a look at the batteries and their performance, and once you have as much information as possible, make your decision from there.

We hope this all made sense; if you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask.

Thanks,

Hi Thor,

Welcome to the RobotShop Forum!

We should have some easy-to-understand repair guides up soon for repairs like that; keep an eye on the Ultimate Roomba Resource Center for any new content.

iRobot had updated their models near the end of 2009/beginning of 2010, as per the reply above. It probably wasn’t that iRobot thought it was a better robot - more likely they only have the 531 as that is the new standard for the ‘530’ Roomba and has replaced the older 530 model.

Thanks,

Hi bradjordan111,

Welcome to the RobotShop Forum.

If after a full charge your battery only reads 15V, then it seems to be a little low. Usually you should see something a little higher, closer to 17V. If it drops down to 13.38V when a load is put on it, then it seems the battery is not holding a charge very well. Likely the battery needs to be replaced.

RobotShop does not sell refurbished batteries or sell individual battery cells. In this case the only thing we can suggest is to buy a new battery. You can find a replacement here.

Please let us know if you need anything else.

Thanks,
