Dear: LMR
Recently guys yesterday I graduated highschool. So as a result of me graduating high school I told my parents I would like to get a job for 3D hubs. They said unless I could work something out that would not be possible because I would need a ride to do my job and I don't have a license and my dad would be doing a lot of driving. So then I thought about maybe doing designs and get paid selling them for 2d cutting and 3d printing but I don't own that great of software for doing that and would need to get that if I would be hoping to do that.
So anyways I then thought about taking a college course on either additive manufacturing or robotics for college credit. I saw udacity had some but they look too hard for me. Any ideas? Thanks!!!

Possibilities
Noah,
A lot of what you decide to do in your life depends on what part of the world you live in and are you in a large city or a rural village. The more metro the area, the more opportunities and the higher the pay.
I graduated High School back in 1970 and had already been working full time in electronics for several years by then. I co-oped during my high school years meaning I only went to school til noon and went to work after that. We had a very progressive high school and I took drafting, metal shop, electronics, auto mechanics, and woodworking, so by the time I graduated, I knew what I wanted to do. I went to an electronics technical school right out of high school and have worked in electronics every since.
I started out in TV & stereo repair shops, got a job with RCA and learned 2-way radio, phone, video, and MATV. When TV repair started dying out in the 80’s, I started doing video repair and still did 2-way radio. In the 80’s I got a job at the University of California as their broadcast engineer. After I retired from there I moved to Arizona and went to work for the state as a communications tech. I have my Ham radio license as well as a commercial license.
My point is, as technology & the job market changes, you have to stay 2 steps ahead of it and keep reinventing yourself. By doing that, I was able to stay in electronics and still have rewarding & high paying jobs throughout my career. If I had stayed in one area, (like TV repair), I would been out of work, broke, and unemployable within a few years.
Never stop learning & explore every opportunity.
Good luck!
Thanks!!!
Thanks!!! I will see what I can do.
3D Printing
Note that if you print someone else’s part, you need to guarantee the quality, ensure it does not break in shipping etc. Normally people who offer their printer for this service have respectably high quality 3D printers. I don’t know what a course would teach you since almost everyone who uses 3D printers are self-taught. If you are prepared to take a course, the most effective would be programming or 3D design (you would not have the software at home though, or perhaps get a student license).
Wheels
A few options, obviously your parents will need to be ok with whatever you choose.
- Bike…a lot ot people bike 20 miles to/from daily to work…even in rain. (Can be dangerous)
- Moped or Motorcycle (Can be dangerous)
- Ride/Carpool with someone that works near where you want to work and has a similar schedule, maybe a co-woker.
- Public Transportation (Bus) from somewhere near home, your fathers work, or someone else.
- Some places will finance a used car for you if you can show you have a job.
- Figure out some skill you have that people are willing to pay you to do on a telecommuting basis.
- Combination: Bike to Bus
- See if someone has one of the above (Bike, Motorcycle, Car) that they will let you borrow or “lease” from them.
- Pool your resources with friends you that you can get some wheels and share the use.
- Figure out something your parents want that you can use diplomacy or trade for help in acquiring transportation. Example, When I was your age, I traded wheels for a less expensive education, got a job while getting an education, and used money from job to subsidize education. Perhaps if you agree to save some or all the money you make for a good purpose, your parents might give you the money.
- Parents/family might lend money if you agreed to use some/all money you make on job initially to pay back.
- A bank would likely give you a “Signature Loan” if you have a savings account of an equal or greater amount. This would also help establish your credit, which you will need.
I guess its all about getting wheels, a really awesome invention. In addition to getting a job, I found wheels are really helpful to acquiring girlfriends and having a social life.
Sorry for being captain obvious. Good luck. I am sure a person as smart as you will figure something out. Just make sure you resolve it in a way that your parents are ok with. Otherwise, it is not worth it at this age.
Thanks that is very true.
Unfortuantely because of my parents I can’t drive but I willl see what I can do. Thanks!!!
