I am looking for a motor to drive a sculpture that rotates one revolution per 15 minutes and is silent or near silent. Is a stepper motor better than plain DC motor? What other hardware do I need to connect motor to wall socket?
Almost no DC motor manufacturers give information about the noise level of their motors. For low RPM, you would need a high gear ratio.
A stepper motor might be a bit quieter than a DC motor, but the gearing tends to be the loud part. A stepper motor is quite a bit harder to control than a DC motor and requires a stepper motor controller. A DC motor can be connected to a wall adapter which provides the right current and voltage.

If you need the motor to be as plug and play as possible, a geared DC motor is the best way, and use acoustic foam to reduce noise.

Note that in order to choose a motor, you ideally need to know the torque requirements as well as speed.
Hi, i agree that a stepper motor might be a bit quieter than a DC motor but actually there are a lot of solutions that can fit you.
Check out this web, they have lots of differents types of gear motors and actuators. Maybe you can find the one you need: clr.es/en/home/products/gear-motors
I hope I have been helpful!
