What's a good hardware platform for building custom robots?

Hello everyone,

I always see people making a lot of robots and machines using either LEGO, or 3d printed parts. Since I don’t have a 3D printer myself, I was wondering which would be a good all-around hardware kit(not software, I want to use my own micro-controllers) with which you can make different robots. I saw that people use LEGO to make their custom robots (eg. Rubik Cube solver, Smartphone unlocker, CNC plotter etc.) and I can’t seem to find the hardware kit they would have bought. I am not necessarily looking for LEGO, any mechanical kit that makes designing robots easier will do. Do you have any suggestions?

Thank you!

Hi David77,
Welcome to the forum.

Here is the list of all robots building kit available at RobotShop: https://www.robotshop.com/en/robot-construction-kits.html

I would recommend this one in particular: https://www.robotshop.com/en/makeblock-ultimate-20-10-in-1-kit-electronics.html?product-code=RB-Mab-153
It allows you to create robots by combining blocks together and you may build up to 10 differents robots with this kit.

The VEX IQ is also an interesting kit to design creative robot: https://www.robotshop.com/en/vex-iq-starter-kit-sensors.html?product-code=RB-Inn-335

Let me know if this helps you.
