what does gtk mean in linux?
“graphics tool kit” if I’m not mistaken.
GNOME Toolkit
GTK is indeed a graphics toolkit for creating GUI applications for X-Windows. It’s what is used for GNOME and those applications, plus many more.

I’ve been calling it GNOME Toolkit for a long time, apparently we are both wrong… After your correction I decided to find out the truth. I found these two sources saying that GTK stands for “Gimp Toolkit”.

And the best source:
gtk.org/
“GTK+, or the GIMP Toolkit, is a multi-platform toolkit for creating graphical user interfaces.”
