Welcome to the RobotShop community! 
What software is a bit vague. There are many options and which ones may be best for you and your situation depend on your goals. What kind of home robot do you wish to create? What level of programming experience do you have? Once I have more details on what you are trying to do I can probably offer some more specific recommendations.
That being said, here are some common platforms and languages you may want to look into that people do use to make various types of robots:
- Arduino (And C/C++)
- RPi (And any language, really. Lots of Python around there, but you could use .NET, C++, etc.)
- ROS2 (on a laptop or RPi!)
If you want more specifics, you’ll really need to provide as many details as possible as to what the home robot you want to create will be all about!
