What should I study to make my own electronics?

Hi guys,

Getting into college this fall and I’ve chosen my major to be electrical/electronic engineering.

I’ve always wanted to design my own microcontrollers and circuit boards and sensors and basically ive always been fascinated by the inner brains (the boards/components) of any electronic device.

The insides of walkie talkies, radios, cell phones, computers, robots…how do I learn how to make my own? Am i getting into the right major?

And who designed the ssc-32? How do you guys at LM know how all this works and what all those little resistors, transistors and other istors do?

Any books for new people (but nothing like super-noob, I can handle college level electronics i think).

Guidance is much appreciated.

Your best starting point is with the book “Getting started in electronics” by Forrest Mims III. Every beginner should have red this book at least once!

Here’s the link to that book. I recently picked one up for my self also to help with my job. I don’t design circuits, but I do program machines that do visual inspection of electronic assemblies as well as basic circuit tests to make sure parts are installed correctly.
