What kit would you recommend to learn to build a programmable moving robot?

Hi guys,

I’m new to this forum and new to robotics. This was just something that always interested me since childhood. Is there any recommendation someone can provide on what kit for a good experience in building a robot please?

What I’m trying to build is nothing pretty, just something simple that walks around and can be programmed to interact with environment in some way, possibly send whatever data back to laptop for more instructions. A full range experience. I can program and do have some basic understanding of electronics and physics, so that is why I’m looking for something that would need soldering and programming, just a good learning experience.

In some thread I saw this kit:
robotshop.com/ca/vex-protobot-autonomous-kit-11.html

Would that work for what I’m trying to do?

Thanks,

CP.

Thanks Benson, I’ll look at those. By walking I didn’t mean walking as in on legs, just roaming around the area somehow and interacting with it somehow like avoiding collisions, etc…

The VEX kit would allow you to create a range of different types of robots (wheels, arms etc), but walking is not too easy. In addition to the Protobotkit, you’ll also need a programming hardware kit and software. If you are good at programming, you can use C directly. The Protobot is good for autonomous control, but you’d need some accessories if you want wireless communication. No soldering required.

For a basic started kit which you can control from the computer (and send data back and forth) consider either the Bluetooth or XBee DFRobotShop Rover Kits. These platforms are for people who want to get started with Arduino and robotics. You can easily add sensors, shields and more to the basic kits. Soldering is required (to connect the XBee headers).
