That empty socket is for an EEPROM used to store sequences. I think it’s only usable on the newer SSC-32 or those upgraded to the Atmega168 though. You can possibly get some samples from Microchip (25LC256 or 25LC512) or purchase them from distributors like DigiKey or Mouser.

Thanks Dale, my ssc-32 is the V2 so it has the atmega168, I found the chip (25LC512) on Digikey for $2.68
