What email lists are you signed up to?

Another good source of reading (pre-LMR) I found was email groups.

Two of them I find most helpful (and informative!)

Yahoo Picaxe Group is not the busiest of them, but a very informative place to hang out. I haven't really entered in any conversations, but enjoy reading a daily digest.

Seattle Robotics Society is another great place to get information. Their daily digest emails are usually chock-full of new ideas, questions, and thoughts.

Anyone else have email lists they belong to?

Lots!

I read the local FreeCycle groups, as well as the local Linux user group list and the Classic Computer Mailing List. Then, there’s stuff like the Dorkbot list, the list for my electric bubblecar and the list associated with TechAdventure. Oh, and there’s Slackware ansd SunRescue, too.

Back in the late 90s I was

Back in the late 90s I was on all kinds of email mailing lists – one for Dream Theater, a band I like, one for R/C planes, etc. During my college years at the turn of the century (what a great thing to be able to say), it seemed that mailing lists faded into disuse and web-based forums/message boards took their place. But as I’ve been getting into metalworking, I’ve been surprised to discover that that’s not the case – there’s two or three machining-related web forums, but the vast majority of the interaction seems to be taking place in Yahoo groups. There’s tons and tons of them, most focusing on just one tool – one for the Grizzly/Harbor Freight mini mill that I own, one for the 4x6 metal-cutting bandsaw, one for the 7x12" metal lathe… So suddenly I’m back on a bunch of mailing lists again. And yeah, there’s also the Knoxville Freecycle list which I just discovered a week ago. Finally got rid of that microwave that’s been sitting in my hallway for a year and a half while I meant to post it on CraigsList but never got around to it…

Too many

Hobby club email lists : Seattle robotics as mentioned, my local Dallas Personal Robotics Group, which does some intersting stuff but could also be called the Garland Personal Supper Club. Botlanta, some interesting robots and a cool Robot Rally. The Twin Cities Robotics, if you see a mushroom cloud near Minneapolis/St Paul, chances are it happened at one of their Robot Shop of Horrors get togethers. The Portland Area Robotics Society has some cool stuff. There is Chibots in Chicago. The Robotics Club of Yahoo has some good stuff. There are others, Homebrew Robotics in Fullerton, CA area, Robotics Society of America in the California Bay Area, Front Range and DARC in Colorado, Austin Robotics Group and SHARP in Houston, CIRC in central Illinois, Triangle Area Robotics, and probably some others too. In Yahoo groups, I have about 155 groups, probably 85% robot related.

Usenet Groups hosted on Google include comp.robotics.misc, some of the sci.electronics groups, comp.arch.embedded,

There are sometimes a few listserv groups as well, associated with universities or otherwise.

And a number of forums too.

y’know, I’ve tried to get on

y’know, I’ve tried to get on my neighborhood’s freecycle list, but I have yet to be approved. They work exclusively on the yahoo groups.

I’d REALLY REALLY like to be in on it, but eh…

Dream Theater
