What determines speed?

I am wondering what determines the max speed of a part. I put a wiper motor on a 12v and it was fast; on a 6v it was slow. Is it the same with wheels? I have two 12v motors. Will a heavy duty battery make them any faster?

Hi @Judithconte,

Wiper motors are usually DC motors with permanent magnets. By increasing the voltage, you increased the current through the winding and because of that, it was turning faster.

On which wheels do you mean?

Which heavy duty battery do you have? And what is the voltage of that battery? You should have the same situation regarding speed (like your test with 12v and 6v) but the capacity of the battery will determine how long the system will run.

I have a 12v lithium ion now. The wheel motors are 12v DC - the king lego sells for mindstorm. They are run to a sabertooth. I used an SLA at first (12v) and he ran faster till the battery started to die. With the lithium ion, he doesn’t go as fast but of course he runs longer. I was hoping there was some way to increase speed using a stronger battery.
