Weight shifting at hips instead of ankles

Is shifting the weight of a robot at the hips instead of the ankles a viable option or would it cause too many complications?

Hi Jaeg,

I am not sure what you mean - could add a small sketch or something? As a first approach just consider this: at times it happens that a Biped stands on one leg. In that case the standing leg has to support the force representing the weight of the whole robot. Is this going in the right direction?

Calypticus.

I was doing some sketches and some thinking and now I have no idea what I was thinking when I started this topic. What I was thinking was basically a BRAT with servos and the hips instead of the ankles. After drawing some things out I don’t think it would work.

Maybe if the leg had two struts (like our bones!), so that the hip and foot form a parallelogram? then the hip could be shifted laterally.
