Update: 2014.09.22
One weekend at Maker Faire was more exhausting than a one week vacation... and twice as fun! Thanks a ton to everyone who helped out. You guys are the best! Several LMR members and people who quietly follow the site stopped by. A few mentioned Jaidyn (aka chickenparmi) by name, looking for PopPet. Of course, people were also looking for Frits' Yellow Drum Machine. I really do need to build one of my own just to bring to Maker Faire.
I'll post some videos and pics below. Check back for updates.
Rick Winscot does some amazing 3D print work. Check out the project on Make or Rick's github repository for more info. Below is CIRKO.
The poseable grey and red fellow with the hypnotic eye is modULO.
Andrew Lindsey's PuppyBot Jr was a big hit. Check the video.
Windell from EMSL was a pleasure to have at our booth. His new EggBot was very popular. Lenore, his lovely partner in life and evil mad science was frequently by to chat.
Here are few of the wonderfully colorful eggs created on the EggBot this weekend. Windell spent time to modify a picture of the LMR Logobot for egg printing. See it in action here and here.
Rick was a bit star-struck when Limor Fried and Phillip Torrone from Adafruit stopped by to chat with Windell and Lenore. That's Limor in the center talking to Lenore in the background. Sandy (renegadegeek) and I are in the fore. When Limor ooohed and aaahed over Rick's beautiful 3D printed robots, he offered them one, which they greatfully accepted!
My son William loved spending time at the booth explaining our robots to young visitors. The two boys on the right are playing with joystick controlled econoSpazzi. EconoSpazzi saw constant use throughout the fair, and handled it really well.
Here's a close up of econoSpazzi.
Not a great picture for this, but we had two of Chris the Carpenter's Rocket Brand Studios Tadpole robots at the table. The green one was running autonomously, mostly relying on its bump switches since the sunlight washed out the IR sensors. The clear acrylic educational model (not pictured) was running on IR control from an old TV remote. Gotta love those Dagu Micro Magician boards!
Here's a closeup of the green Tadpole, taken at my home last year. I was attending an online course called 'Control of Mobile Robots', and using the Tadpole as a test platform.
Rick had two of his Red Rover bots at the table. See more about them on the Adafruit website. One was autonomous, and one was radio controlled. A lot of kids tried to use the antenna on the remote as a joystick. There was also a lot of radio interference at the fair. Rick said he'd go with infrared remote control next time.
OddBot's Dagu Doodle Bot Here's some video of it writing, "Make Robots".
Rick had some nifty stickers printed up, which looked great and went like hotcakes. Here one of his cool 3D printed robots offers a sticker to visitors.
My Fish Tank worked much more reliably than his nemesis, Piranha Tank. Lucky for him, I guess. Being outside the DIY infrared sensors didn't work well, or mostly at all. However, the Sharp IR sensor hidden in his bowtie worked great!
I used RobotGrrl's RoboBrrd kit to make Professor RoboBrrd. No sensors yet, but fun to watch move about. The wings flap, beak opens and closes, monocle raises and lowers, and light bulb eyes wink blink and pulse.
Here's Tiny Tin, newly minted for Maker Faire. Sorry for the rotation of the video on Vine.
Update: 2014.09.18
In terms of LMR members, we'll have Rick Winscot, myself, and Kevin (of Bob the Biped fame). Plus some help from less active online but nontheless awesome members like Sandy (aka renegadegeek) and Andrew Lindsey (aka ellindsey).
Special guest star from EMSL, Windell Oskay will also be joining us, and helping all weekend long. Windell will have the new version of his EggBot there.
Finally, I seem to have collected a bunch of other peoples' robots over the years. I wanted to represent as many members as possible, so I am bringing:
- A Rocket Brand Studios Tadpole (by Chris the Carpenter)
- My Professor RoboBrrd, based on the RoboBrrd kit (by RobotGrrl)
- A Dagu Doodle Bot (by OddBot)

Yes, Let's Make Robots will be at Maker Faire NY again this year. Rick (rwinscot) and I will be running the LMR table, and we would be very happy if anyone can help us out.
Here are some ways you can participate:
- Official Team Member: Spend at least 6 hours on Saturday or Sunday, and get a free entry pass to the faire for that day.
- Set-up Crew: If you are available to help out on Friday, come help set up; there's usually a fun 'Maker Mixer' in the evening with free food and beer.
- Bring/Send Robots: If you can bring or send us your robot(s), we'll be happy to display them the LMR table.
- Spread the Word: Let people know LMR will be at NY Maker Faire, and that we are looking for volunteers for the table.
Reply below if you can help.
