Out of curiosity, has anyone done any projects with video hardware on a VTail model? Is such a configuration feasible?
Here are some Google search images…

But of course, I mounted a FatShark CCD Pilot Cam on the front, it fits nicely on the Vtail 500 and you even have a nice screw hole for it. One of the things I love about the Vtail is the tail is perfect spot for mounting the transmitter very far away from everything your Rx, if you wanna add any GPS, etc.
I am planning on setting up a pilot cam on the Mini, again it has nice spot on the top of the tail to put the Tx on. I really need to pick up a Mobius camera to put on top to get some good videos while FPVing
Alright, very cool. I had a lot of fun building my rover (almost done, gotta finish that before I move on to the next project), and I’ve been eyeing a quadcopter like this as maybe a future project.
The other thing I have to settle with is cost. Besides the fact that building your own is clearly more fun, from a completed/usage standpoint, where would the advantages of a model like the VTail outshine buying a consumer model like the AR.Drone, which is obviously cheaper. I’m quite new at the idea of this. Is it more capable in outdoor flight, does it have a further range, could it have a longer flight time, etc?
I put the FPV equipment on the Hunter Vtail Mini - man is that fun to fly FPV, I was doing much better with the Vtail mini than I did with the QAV250. the Fatshark pilot cam fits on the Mini nicely, I just took some 3m double sided tape, the foam squishy kind, put some on top and bot of the cam and squished it in between the bottom and top plate.
Here is a video of my zipping around the backyard with the mini:

Attaching some pics too
Nice. I would’ve figured putting all that on the smaller model would’ve been challenging.
I was having a blast zipping around the backyard between and around trees, well I didn’t realize there was a tree branch higher up, but I found it and I broke my FPV Tx.
Anyone have some ideas on how to fix this? The SMA connector broke off, I could solder the top 2 prongs back on, but the three below snapped clean on. Haven’t found where I can order a new piece,
I am ordering another 600mW ImmersionRC Tx, but would like to try to fix this one.
That vtail look like a scorpion with the antenna on the back… LOL
But yeah, might be a lot of weight on the connector…
Might be better in the future to have a short cable there, with the antenna mounted directly on the frame.
That baby is loaded…
I love this guy but these RCX motors are working hard, it’s pretty good zipping around but I was doing flips and you need some decent height to recover with just the added weight of the camera, wires and transmitter. I am collecting up different motors to try out on this and the QAV250 - got a line on some sunnysky 2300Kv motors I keep hearing great things about. So the Kickstarter for Flite Fest 2014 by the Flite Test gang was funded today, they raised well over what they were trying. I am going to be going July 24 - 27 out near Canton, OH. Hopefully will run in to some people there, I gotta get my FPV practice on for some FPV racing.
Update - got my Mobius Action Cam today, so that is mounted on, I found an SMA connector, have some more on order just in case, and I got it hooked back up -
going to test with the antenna out straight like you see in my pic. The curved way I had it setup, basically made it hook onto the branch and pull stuff out, so this may work better.
Also with the RCX 1804 motors - the 3 bladed props work so much better, the thrust is up and you have way better control.
I was out messing earlier (minus the FPV transmitter & mobius cam) and doing flips was great.
So goal now is to get some better FPV video using the mobius recording vs my DVR on the 5.8Ghz LCD screen.
