Hi I am considering the following gripper for my underwater ROV high school club. This seems to be like a sturdy part, but is it waterproof? If not, can it be waterproofed? Does it already come with servos on it? Any info on its suitability would be great, or if you can suggest other grippers for an underwater ROV with tutorials that would be helpful. Thanks!
Hello @brianbutt and welcome to the forum!
That is a nice gripper but as you mentioned it doesn’t seem to be waterproof so I wouldn’t recommend using it for an underwater ROV. What I recommend for that type of project is the BlueRobotics Newton Subsea Waterproof ROV / UUV Gripper which is made for the BlueROV but it can work with other subsea vehicles as well.
The motor inside is controlled by a purpose-built brushless motor controller that accepts a standard servo-style PWM signal so that the gripper can be controlled like a regular servo, thrusters or lights. Power can be provided by the same battery that drives the thrusters as the gripper is compatible with 9-18V input and draws up to 6A current.
I hope that information can help you out
