Trying to Build a Remote Control Vehicle

I am starting a school project and I want to build a remote control robot.
I am unsure what components I need. I want a differential drive (so I know I need 2 DC Geared motors).
The electronics is where I am having trouble.
For a remote control vehicle do I still need a motor controller? a microcontroller? or are they part of the receiver and transmitter with the remote control setup?

Thanks for any info!!

Hi cdeloyer,

Welcome to the RobotShop Forum. A normal R/C transmitter/receiver can control servo motors and also R/C motor controllers(choose the one you need based on the motor’s nominal voltage and maximum continuous current). You don’t need a separate microcontroller unless you want to automate part of the robot or incorporate sensors. You will likely need a separate battery (connected to the motor controller) to power the motors.

Hope this helps,
