Since the sale is on I was thinking of getting the tri-track kit with no electronics. I already have motor controller and extra BAP…
I thought it might be fun to try the encoders (maybe different controller.). I was wondering about swaping in GHM-16s for the motors, but they are 30 to 1 where the normal ones for the kit are 50 to 1. Is there a 50 to 1 with encoders? Suggestions?
Kurt
P.S - Not sure why you would want to put the 7.2v 2800mah battery in it As talked about in the description
That is what I figured. The PS2 version mentions different battery packs, but the no electronics one still shows the 7.2v, but probably just takes awhile to propagate the change…
So I went ahead and ordered with the GHM-16s, plus a few more goodies, like extra y cables. They sure come in handy when debugging things, also may use with BM sensors to try mulitple ones on the same IO pin.
I am not sure I believe it is the same as the GHM-01s which don’t have the ability to install the encoder. My Rover has 2 of each of these. I know that work great on the rover!
Just for anyone browsing the forums and considering the same thing:
The build quality on all of the parts is excellent, and it’s pretty easy to disassemble as well if you need to. For those who haven’t seen the Lynxmotion tracks first hand, it’s hard to express just how much traction these things have. Honestly, with the right motors, this thing could climb a tree.
I did end up ordering the Tri-Track with GHM-16s, and they’re nice motors. However, I think they are a bit under-powered for this chassis (fair enough; I’m sure that’s why the GHM-02s are the ones that come in the default kit). The chassis moves forward and back just fine, but on a high-traction surface like flat tile or a carpet, turning is quite slow and struggles a bit. It seems likely that the default GHM-02 motors with higher torque will work better. I have a feeling that the 1:30 motors like the GHM-16 would work fine on sand or another soft surface, but the sheer amount of static friction when trying to rotate on the spot slows them down.
Anyway, no regrets, and thanks Lynxmotion for making a really high-quality product.
