The rickety one

Ok since I have a ssc-32 coming tomorrow, I figured I’d get together some of the sevos I have laying around and do a quick mock up that could be functional. It’s flimsy 1/8" plywood, weak Fitaba 3003 servos. More than anything I wanted to play. At least I can get a feel for what I’ll have to work with later.

I will add a base for rotation, just ran out of time. Everyone at 4:30pm was probably thinking " oh no he’s cutting plywood again, whats he building now". Plywood is awesome for prototyping keyed assemblies. Also it’s really cheap. The other really cool prototyping material is Dow Blue Core fan fold. I’ve built complete 3d panel tooling proto’s to verify cad data to the actual part we get to cut. It’s amazing how often some cad jockey makes a change that isn’t passed down.

This is by no means even cloes to what I would like to do with an arm. I just want to get a feel for the code, and play around with it a bit. That way when we go into using one of the L6 arms in an attempted manufacturing application, I’m not caught with my pants down in the programming department.

do you have a laser cutter at work, or home?

At work, we are an industrial laser cutting facility.

Too cool, the thing does work! It was a properly named project, it is Rickety to be sure. I’ll cheat and add some bracing to it for tonight so I can play. But I have to say that the SSC-32 is pretty much plug and play with the sequencer software. I’m runnig it through a usb to rs232 conveter, 9v battery to the VL, and two 6v AA packs to the two servo banks. using channels 0, 1, 16, 17. I also did a rotating base at work this morning. Setting up and saving the config was a snap. Now I got to dig through all those boxes of RC crap and find some extensions…

Awesome board Jim, after I do a couple ugly bracing mods I’ll try and get a video up later.

Ok got a video, this is just plain fun…
media.putfile.com/rickety-1

i click the link, and it says it cant find the media…

sorry working on the video, should be back up soon

Ok, got the link back up, Jim pointed out the error of my ways in I was trying to give him some promotion in the video. Well a couple 4 beers too many, I miss spelled the link to lynxmotion… linxmotion hey it was close… lol

i like it, it doesn’t look too rickety from the video, but maybe thats cause of the braces, but i like it, your going to make a bigger arm you say?

It’s rickety all right, the ply even braced is to flexable. The servos like about 5v above that they are a bit jerky. So the 6v pack is a bit goofey till it starts to draw down. Then it smooths out. I’ll be redesigning the base to incorporate a lazysusan style bearing, that way the weight is off the servo. Also am redesigning the arm itself as a more rigid structure. I’m just playing around till I get the full go ahead at work to play full blown.
