I just saw the new video of Boston Dynamics and I simply had to share it with you guys. The video is about a biped called PETMAN. They only need to add schwarzenegger’s head and they are done!
The work those guys do is amazing! Look at how fluent the biped walks! Amazing!
That is a very interesting video and a robot way beyond my capabilities.
But as a former law officer, I see certain shortcomings in a pursuit/hunter/stalker bot whose range is restricted by an umbilical and who tries to sneak up on his target with a strobing red light on his head.
I’ll bet in a week you, Zenta, Kurte, and INNERBREED could come up with a fully functioning, untethered, semi-autonomous version programmable/guideable by a Wii Nunchuk, with an Alien or Owl head. And DiaLFonZo could make it fly.
So, boys, the gauntlet is down, I look to hear from you next Wednesday!
I think I’ve seen it 10 times already. Boston Dynamics approach of using dynamic gait and balance algorithms combined with their fast and strong actuators has proven to be the ultimate way to make the perfect “walking machine”.
THIS IS SO INSPIRING !
Imagine a complete soccer team of PETMAN’s combined with advanced AI. Maybe its going to be true that the robots will beat the humans in soccer at 2050!
It looks like it’s is using the heel-toe roll-off walking like we humans do. But if I look closely, I can see that one feet is totally on the ground before the other one heel starts moving upwards. So it’s not the dynamic heel-toe roll-off as Boston Dynamics showed in there video
Two questions relative the HRP-4C:
Does stalking a robot constitute a crime under most nation’s criminal codes?
Can a robot get a Restraining Order against a human?
I saw the prototype for this last week, even that looked cool. Thanks for posting.
Roboted: i would expect that in the future, humans will move into the technology that will allow us to use total AI. We all know that a robot that can feel, think, and act for its self would be a real danger to ourselves. Saying that 'Robots could certainly be programmed to understand the legal system. Remember the 3 law?
To answer your question, I wouldnt say a robot cannot make that choice, but im certain that the human owner can get an injunction against another human to not approach his robot. This would fall into the same bracket as property. You can stop someone from going near your home, so you can stop someone going near your robot.
Asimo sure is amazing and a inspiring. The builders are way ahead of most other builder. But the walking still looks funny. Not human like… Boston Dynamics defiantly rule at this!
Agree that Boston Dynamics is the leader when it comes to the dynamic walking part. But I’m wondering how they are going to power the hydraulics on PETMAN. I don’t think PETMAN would be very useful for indoor use with a big noisy petrol/diesel generator on his back…
Maybe fuel cells?
I wouldn’t think that stalking a Bot would be a crime no more than following a car is…it’s what you do after you have stalked the Bot or car that matters…it’s a piece of private property with ownership so if you damage it you can be charged to pay for it.
Until a Robot becomes a " sentient being "I for one hope that we never get so stupid as to give ourselves over to control of a machine of any kind , they are tools nothing more, advanced tools but just tools.
As far as a restraining order I think " DANGER KEEP BACK HEAVY MACHINERY OPERATING THAT CAN KILL YOU " should be restraining enough for most of us and for the others well you’ve heard about the "gene pool " thing.
Very cool, but some what scary to think a machine can move that fast. Bet when they field test this one they will hold on to their hats with both hands.
Thanks for the post Xan! Petman is AWESOME! I wonder if they could turn him into a boxing or martial arts robot - that would be cool!
Thanks Zenta for the Cheetah robot video - I would love to have one of those as a pet!
