Telescopic Electric Actuators

I have searched far and wide for Electric Telescopic Actuators
does anyone know of any manufacturers that have this product.

Ideally, I want an actuator which can extend 3x its smallest size. I know they exist for hydraulics or pneumatics but not for electric. The video attached is a NASA model which has a custom made one but I have not seen one on available for the consumer market. Any ideas?

Hmm,

still cant find one,

where are some good sources to look at for these sort of components?

so frustrating…
please help anyone

Hi dave,

If you find something, let us know. All of the linear actuators we offer can only extend a maximum of ~80% their original length (extended length being a maximum of 180% the retracted length).

Hi Badboi,

These do not seem easy to come by, nor the technology behind them. They seem to be called “column actuators” or “telescoping linear actuators”. One possible method is to use rack and pinion gears; a wide spur gear moves a rack gear within a channel, and when it reaches the end of that rack, the rack pulls the second one (making contact with the spur gear as well) and locks into place, continuing the motion. If you use a special type of rack and pinion gearing (or a worm gear), the system can be self-locking. The rack gear can be hollow to reduce weight. There would need to be sufficient overlap between racks for structural integrity.
