Not sure where to start with finding the right sort of kits to begin with.

Welcome to RobotShop community.

According to the manufacturer, the age recommendation for this kit is 13 and above.

It also doesn’t include the soldering tools so you would need to order a soldering kit separately.

Do you have the soldering tools and your son is already familiar with soldering parts?
