Stepper Motor with timed interval for time-lapse night photography

I realize there is already a thread for a motorized dolly however, I need something slightly different. I’m looking to take some night shots with long exposures and need a motorized dolly that has the capability to move>stop>shoot>move>stop>shoot.

I know I need a stepper motor, but am not sure how I would regulate the time between intervals.

Can anyone supply me with a rough list of what I need?

Thanks to anyone who can help!

Hello tinytowers,

Is the motion panning or will the dolly be driving on a rail for instance?

If the motion involves rolling, then a stepper motor sounds indeed to be a good choice. If the camera is panning, perhaps a servo motor will be simpler to use.

In order to control a stepper motor, you will need a stepper motor controller (to handle the motors current and signals to the coils) and a microcontroller to handle the sequence of actions (stopping, moving, etc).

As for the camera shooter you might need an IR emitter, a special cable or simple a small servo motor pushing the shutter button, depending on the type of camera you own.
