Special Project

Hello All,

So I’ve started a project for my wife for christmas. I’ve made a rose from sheet metal and steel all thread. i plan on mounting it into a hollowed out
wooden base. my question is: I ordered a free rpm of 100 reduction gear motor and some LEDs. I wan’t to wire it to were I plug it into a basic
12v or 24V dc plug, (I have both) the LEDs stay on and I can connect the motor so the rose will spin slowly, kinda like a lighter display case.
Any schematics or videos would be greatly appreciated, or any other parts I may need.

thank you

Wow, nicely done!

It sounds like you’ll need a power module… I use a couple of these in my ROVer project (links below)… the primary battery/power source is 12v and then I use these power modules to convert to 6v and 5v for other components as needed (the primary drive motors are 12v).

Do a video once you’re done!

Cheers,

Nick.

If you already have the motor and LEDs, can you provide us with the specifications?

This is the link to the motor I think will work.

Here is the link to the LEDs

That motor is rated at 6V, so you will need a DC-DC converter if your main power supply is 12V or 24V:
robotshop.com/en/power-regulators.html
You’ll need a separate one for the LEDs since they operate at 1.8V to 2.2V.
Your main adapter would need to be split to the two regulators, which then power the motor / LEDs.
The power supply needs to handle the total current of the system.

ok so some things came in today.

the pwm i ordered:
amazon.com/gp/product/B00RY … UTF8&psc=1

a possible motor choice:
amazon.com/gp/product/B0080 … UTF8&psc=1

connected to a power supply;
input: 120vac 60 Hz
output:12vdc 500mA

so far motor is working the way I want. but i also ordered the following;

finished product power outlet:
amazon.com/gp/product/B01IB … UTF8&psc=1

and these LEDs in both white and red, I plan on using at least 3 or each connected straight to input power along with input of the pwm:
amazon.com/gp/product/B007O … UTF8&psc=1

will this work for actually wiring it up or am I going to catch something on fire? sorry I’m kind of new to this i appreciate all the help.

One possible issue that I can see is your power source only delivers 500ma at 12v; you’ll want to very the current draw on the controller, motor, and however many LEDs so that you’re under that limit as 500ma is not very much.

Good luck!

Nick.

Here are some updated pictures from the project. I’m working on uploading a short clip of it. I ended up going with a small reduction gear motor connected to a pwm, and 12v LEDS with built in resistors.

Terrific job!

Looks great - yeah, would be great to see a video when you have time. Congratulations!

I’m having issues uploading a video. I doing it from my phone, it’s only 13sec long it keeps saying too large to upload. I tried cutting down to 13sec and 5 sec but still says too big

Hmmm… I’m not sure what the policy is here on the site… I personally use YouTube for the videos you see linked in my signature… if you’re comfortable posting there, of course.

Cheers,

Nick.

Make sure to change the settings to 1080 I don’t think I defaulted it so it might start at 360

Beautiful job! Really… very nicely executed!

Nick.

Thank you Nick! I appreciate all the help from everyone. I had a lot of moments I was just scratching my head trying to figure out how to make this work.

Haha… I have that feeling all the time - ever single day I work on ROVer :stuck_out_tongue:

…on the other hand, it’s that much more satisfying once you figure something out after having had to struggle
