SparkFun Slip Ring - 6 Wire (2A)

Re: SparkFun Slip Ring - 6 Wire (2A) - RobotShop

Hi,

Based on the motor spec, the rated load current is 2A which is compatible with the slip ring. However, the max. stall current of the motor is 30A which is significantly larger than the 2A current rating of the slip ring.

Can this motor still be used with the slip ring?

What is a suitable alternative/ design solution to avoid wires getting tangled for rotating parts?

DC motor:
12V, 313RPM 416.6oz-in HD Premium Planetary Gearmotor w/ Encoder - RobotShop

Slip ring which has a current rating of 2A:

Thanks in advance!

Hi @rjones94 ,

Theoretically, you could us this slip ring with the motor but if there is no load on the motor.

If the load is increasing, bigger current will damage this slip ring.

I am not sure for the alternative, except for the slip ring with higher amperage.

There are some industrial ones, which are probably not cheap…

Thanks.

I assume another option would be to include some sort of circuit protection to prevent the motor drawing more than 2amps.

Given that the rated load current of the motor is 2A, the slip ring would be fine the majority of the time, but if the motor stalls it would draw 20A. Would measures or circuit protection could I put in place to limit the maximum current that the motor could draw?

Hi @rjones94

You could simply use a fuse or an automatic circuit breaker.
