Sortive, but not entirely, new to robotics

Hello and good evening everyone.

For the longest time, I’ve been interested in robotics, mostly the ones that actually explore surroundings. I built my first kit in 2003, which needless to say didn’t last long because the dust destroyed the PCB. It was the Build Your own Sumo Bot Kit by Tab Robotics. I had fun with it, while it lasted. Over the past couple years, I’ve kinda kept my interest alive, but due to funding, was very limited to what I could do. I built one of those Bristlebots, which are fun to watch with my cat, and built a modified Beetlebot that used the Tamiya Twin Motor Gearbox as the base and used some wheels off a old r/c truck. That one is still kicking, though I wanna try and convert it to a BEAM bot. But right now, I want something different. Something that will start out good, and possibly prove to be a good hackable kit. With limited funding, I’ve decided on these two kits:

robotshop.us/owi-soccer-pro-robot-kit-2.html
And
robotshop.us/tamiya-70162-robot-construction-kit-4.html

Which would be better from the two as in rugged and hackability?

Hi striker0 and welcome to the RobotShop Community!

Both kits are excellent, but they are not comparable, because The Tamiya kit is meant to allow construction of robots as you wish, the soccer robot has one task, playing soccer.

Both are hackable, but if the primary criteria is modification and hacking, the Tamiya Robot Construction Kit wins hands down.

Thanks for the input Jbrunet.

It’s nice getting a straight answer for once, instead of a million what-if replies.
