Sonar ranger finders such as Maxbotix... any narrow beam units?

I’m having difficulty getting a range measurement from a range finder looking down a tube or shaft about 48 inches ID (it’s a long story, but I need to do this). My prototype works fine in all other situations, but when I make it sight down the shaft, I get meaningless short readings, like 22 and 36 inches instead of what should be 78 or more inches to the closed end.

I’m guessing that my MaxSonar EZ-0 has too wide a beam and is getting echoes off the walls of the shaft, thus confusing itself.

Does anyone know of a sonar range finder with a focussed narrow beam, say one that would spread less than 48 inches over maybe 15 feet of distance? Any recommendations?

Hi @Tazling!

Maybe you could try this one: https://www.robotshop.com/en/maxbotix-maxsonar-ez4-high-performance-sonar.html

Manufacturer claims that it has the highest noise tolerance and narrowest beam of any of manufacturer indoor sensors.
