Slowest RPM possible?

I am designing a system in which I need to lift a weight of about 2 ounces as slowly yet smoothly as possible. I’m finding plenty of motors that boast high speeds and high torques etc, but I really need to find out the opposite!

Can anyone suggest a proper motor/gearset that would get some ideas flowing?

My best idea so far is some sort of microstepper setup, where it looks like the slowest RPM would be approx. 0.25.

If I went with that, where could I find raw gears with which I could build a gear reduction system to further slow the system (or run the stepper motor somewhat faster and use the gears to get things properly slow…)

THANKS!

We offer some low RPM gear motors here:

Ex:

robotshop.com/en/cytron-12v-17rpm-111oz-in-spur-gearmotor.html

To get these down to 0.25rpm, you would need a DC motor controller.

The other way would be to gear down the motor as much as possible. For example, purchase a few of these:

Hard to say how smoothly it will run though.

A quick way to gear down a motor is to use a worm gear (we don’t offer many of those at this time though).
