Complicated slip rings with multiple sircuits are hard to find on a budget. Does anyone know a good source or method of building them?

If you only need 4 conductors at low current, you can get “phone cord untanglers”. You can get all you want around here for $.99 each and they have gold plated contacts. Try your local dollar store.

That is a great idea. I kept thinking there must be some simple hobby or household item that can be used, other than a jack, and this is it. I’m going to find me some of those untanglers.

other option
searching “rotating cable coupler” in google shopping brings up options for various plugs that could be hacked for this purpose. some even have 19 pins. this i the option that i think i am going to use even though i need only 5 pins.
