Six Wheel Drive Rover with Independent Suspension

I am workng on a design for a 6WD Rover with suspension on all wheels. I have already got a nice two wheel module designed and just need to figure out how and where to mount springs for the suspension.

Right now I am thinking about adding two load balancing springs to each wheel - one to pull up and the other to pull down. I am hoping this will provide a true independent suspension for this rover.

Here is the nearly completed six wheel drive system with independent drive and suspension on all wheels. The only thing I am missing is some good coil shock springs to attach from the “L” bracket to the end of the servo wheel bracket. This drive system is modular and can easily be expanded to any number of wheels. I am working on another version of my suspension system that will be able to do one additional trick.

Added note: I did find these miniature shocks at Budget Robotics. I don’t know if they could be made to work for what I need. It looks like they are about the right length.

Hello,

Is this going to be a Mars rover type 'bot or are you planning on it having some speed?

It looks fun, how heavy will it be?

Well, at present, I don’t have a specic goal for this robot. I saw The Journey Robot somebody else made and decided I wanted to see if I could build one also. I like the idea of independent drive and suspension.

Consider this version 1. I am already working on version 2, which will have a much more Journey Robot like suspension.

I have designed version 2 of my multi-wheel suspension system, but need to find another 3D CAD program I can use. I think Solid Edge timed out on me and I can no longer do anything with subassemblies. :frowning: I guess my 30 day evaluation is now over.

Version 2 of my suspension has the wheels coming straight out from the chassis rather than being inline with it. It is definitely more Journey Robot like, which is really what I am after. Version 1 would work, but for different applications than what I want. Version 1 might work really well for a low slung battle bot.

Here is my new suspension design, which is much more like what Journey Robot has. This is also my first new design done with the Alibre Design software. I don’t have the shock towers in this design yet.

I apologize for the bad quality of these pictures. I don’t have the photo rendering or other modules yet, but will have those early next month when I get my CDs.
