I’ve come across some sales pitches for Silex Technologys device servers. Supposedly these can handle multiple usb 2.0 devices at full speed. Info here: silexamerica.com/sx-2000wg.html
This seems like it would be perfect to add one of those pocket usb hubs you see for laptops, a usb to serial adapter for the ssc or bot board, and a usb webcam. What do you guys think?
Be careful with expectations for this. Many wireless usb device servers fail to mention how utterly poorly they work with high bandwidth devices like webcams. while there are some that do work, a vast majority of them are intended primarily for printers and barcode scanners and other i/o un-intensive applications. I would recommend researching the product thoroughly and verifying others have successfully used it for video greater than say 160x120 b/w (for example) resolution.
It claims to be able to support up to 14 devices via a hub and its usb port is 2.0 full speed (480 mbps). To me that seems plenty for purposes of bot.
For my goal in the first post (webcam, botboard, ssc32) are there any wifi device servers someone on this forum knows will work? My goal here is wireless control but to avoid soldering since I have no iron and no skill with one, and I dont fancy frying expensive parts!
My other goal is to keep it cheap, I’m on a fixed income.
I have successfully used a microsoft vx3000 lifecam through a Lantronix UBOX 2100 ethernet USB device server connected via a DLink WAP configured as a wireless client. That is not an exact equivalent to what you have posted here where the wireless is built into the same product as the USB device server, but it does prove it can be done.
