Sherline 5400

As a complete novice can I ask the following:

  1. I assume I need a Linux OS to operate a cnc converted mill as above.
  2. Can I download Linux on my Windows 8 laptop?
3.This is more of an academic exercise than a necessity so do I need a
control box after I have fitted the motors etc?
  3. I have been told that my computer will require a receiving socket or 21pin parallel facility.
Can this be overcome by alternative cable connectors?
5 Is there an idiots guide to a first time attempt to covert from manual to cnc?
  4. I currently use Roland products cad/cutting which is powered
by Corel Drawer. Is this compatible or do I require fancy software
to operate mills axis. What would the whole deal cost for an old mill
    6 years old?
  5. Does the control box permit the operation of the conversion?

Apologies for being so inept.

Regards Paul

Hi Paul,

There are a bunch of ways to control a Sherline or other CNC type of machine.
LinuxCNC is proven and free but Mach3 is an option too.

Linux can be “downloaded” on your Windows laptop and will probably run on it too. There are a bunch of tutorials on their website.
Most of the time you can download the “ISO” and burn a DVD which is used to boot from the DVD. Once booted you can install or not.

Sherline machine come in different packages but if you buy a “CNC Ready” system all you have to order is the “CNC Package” for it.

The Sherline box does require a real parallel port and there are not ways around. You can get a Parallel to USB but make sure it’s a real LPT/Parallel port.

Not that we now, but many information are available online.

You need a software that will take vector (dxf) to cutting path.
Something like Vectric Cut2d or simialar. Once that’s done you will generate the GCode for the machine and run it into the LinuxCNC software.

  1. Not sure we understand this question.
