Can anyone recommend a strong servo compatible with Arduino? Ideally I'm looking for:
- Speed
- Torque
- Compatible with existing libraries
I'll have a separate power supply, so the voltage isn't too important.
I'm a newb, so any thoughts/recommendations appreciated from those with experience.
Getting stared with servos
Some random comments:
- Get any “standard” servo that comes with an assortment of horns. Be frugal and experiment.
-
Non-premium servos often come with very unobtainable Chinese specs. Don’t be surprised if your servo does not preform at the maximum limits.
- The spline on different vendor motors is likely to be different. Identify the horns.
-
The fully digital models are quite a bit more costly than the traditional analog. The simplest units take a pulse wdith of approximately 900 to 2300 usec with 1500 being zero.
- Not all servos will span the full 180 degree range.
- Adruino and this site have examples.
- Post your success and ask questions if in doubt.
Update: What I bought
Hopefully someone will find this update useful…
I found these servo spec comparisons very helpful:

I decided on the HS-805BB Giant Scale Servo Motor
- the specs are very good
- the reviews are very good
- the price is very good
- I’ve heard the company endorsed
- This servo is recommended for use with a particular pan/tilt system, which is another good endorsement
I also bought a HD-1501MG since it was cheap and high spec, with reasonable reviews.
