Servo motor with 360 control

Hi there,

I was wondering if there are servo motors out there that can turn 360 degrees and beyond and still act as a servo motor where it can go to specific position and have holding torque.

Thanks.

Yes, for instance the dynamixel servos.

They are, however, more expensive than hobby servos and have completely different control protocol.

Ah, sorry, I re-checked and in the position mode they can only go 300°

Servo motors

You may want to look at stepper motors. More costly and difficult to control but have the good holding torque plus 360 bidirectional rotation.

Cheap dumb way would be to just stick two 180° servos together. If you need fine 360° motion just use steppers.

Steppers have a well defined number of step/rotation, so turn it of that steps and it does a turn. It may need an endstop to find home position, or a user button. They are controlled with drivers which tell the motor to go one step forward or backward.

If you search our forums,

you will find MarkusB has converted a servo somewhat in the manner you are requesting.

Servo to a gear train?

Another option is to run the servo through a small gear train that converts the approximately 180 degree movement into whatever you need, at a decrease in torque.

Take a look at some of the servocity products as an example (others are also carrying a similar line, so this is just an example):
