Serial port connection troubles, PC side

Hi, I’ve read the general troubleshooting guide and I still haven’t been able to resolve my issue.

I purchased a complete kit, Lynxmotion Phoenix hexapod with the ssc-32 board. I have attached all the servo connections, run the main power and the logic power. I didn’t have an external serial connector on my machine so I rummaged around the robotics lab and found this:

My motherboard is an Asus P7H55-M Pro, viewable here.

Windows device manager confirms I do have a single com connection, and to my knowledge, it is the white, 9-pin connector in the top right hand corner of the “above” view. I’ve attached my cable to this port and run it to the back of the machine where I attached a serial extension cable and ran it to the robot.

Windows device manager does not recognize it as a com, and instead adds an unsupported “PCI Simple Controller” to the list of devices. No drivers found.

When power is applied to the board, the green LED comes on and occasionally a leg will kick, so power looks good and connections look solid on the board. However, no signal is ever received from the serial cable.

The Lynxmotion software cannot find the ssc-32 board. I have tried baud jumping with no success.

Okay, I know its long, but in these situations more information is better than less. Thanks for any help y’all can provide and PLEASE tell me I’m just blind and I’ve missed something obvious, my ego will be fine if it means progress on my project. Thanks all.

I’m no PC guru sorry. I’m not going to try and troubleshoot if your PC’s motherboard can support a serial port. However we have a tutorial on adding a serial port card.

I read through that tutorial. It doesn’t seem to apply since the tutorial addresses installing a new PCI card with serial connectivity, while I believe my motherboard already has serial connectivity. I did use this to verify I was using the correct type of cable, however. The one pictured and the one I have appear to be the same. I do wish there were a better angle on the actual connector.

IMHO, I don’t think the motherboard DOES support serial communications. The motherboard specification doesn’t list a serial port (other than USB ports). You could use the FTDI USB to Serial converter that Lynxmotion sells.

I agree that the motherboard is unclear regarding this. Hell, the connectors I’m looking at aren’t even labeled. I’ll give Asus a call, but its looking like the serial-USB converter is going to be my only option. Thanks for your input.
